Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but for many people eating it can be quite a challenge - they are simply not hungry in the morning. Why do we not feel like eating after so many hours of break and is this a cause for concern? Here are possible causes of a lack of appetite in the morning.

Lack of appetite in the morning can be disturbing, especially if we have been feeling it for a long time. For years, scientists have warned that eating breakfast late and starting the day with coffee may, in the long run, lead to, among other things, to the development of type 2 diabetes or obesity, the body enters the starvation mode, which promotes the deposition of adipose tissue, so there are problems related to the metabolic syndrome, including insulin resistance.

But there are also effects that are felt almost immediately: a lack of energy to study and work, a drop in blood glucose (noticeable as fatigue, even after a night's sleep) or a large appetite in the later hours of the day.

Why we may not feel hungry in the morning? And should we worry about it? While the most common causes of morning lack of appetite are quite well understood, there is really no good answer to this second question - it all depends on why you don't feel like eating.

Big supper or late snack the day before

This is the most common cause of a lack of appetite in the morning - especially if the meal was high in fat or protein. It takes longer to digest, so the stomach empties more slowly, so you may feel fullness for much longer than after a carbohydrate-dominated meal. High protein content can also affect the levels of hormones that regulate hunger, including ghrelin, glucagon-like peptide-1, YY peptide, and cholecystokinin.

Natural fluctuations in hormone levels

During the day and night, the level of hormones in the blood changes - this is a completely natural phenomenon, which, however, can also affect the appetite. Adrenaline levels tend to be higher in the morning, which can suppress appetite, slowing the rate of gastric emptying and increasing the proportion of carbohydrate stored in the liver for energy production.

Some studies also suggest that levels of leptin, the satiety hormone, may also be higher in the morning. Nevertheless, if you experience sudden changes in appetite, it's worth ittalk to your doctor about it.

Morning lack of appetite may also be the first symptom of pregnancy - especially if it is accompanied by nausea or nausea (this symptom occurs in as many as 80% of women in the first months after conception).

Nausea can of course negatively affect your appetite at any time of the day, but most often it occurs in the morning. Lack of appetite in such a situation is caused by a reduced sense of taste and smell, which usually occurs during inflammation of the upper respiratory tract. In the initial stage of the disease, you should not force yourself to eat, but it is worth drinking a lot.

Undiagnosed thyroid problems

Loss of appetite and reluctance to eat in the morning can be a sign of hypothyroidism or decreased thyroid function. However, then other symptoms also appear, including dry skin, hair loss, swelling, constipation, weight gain, problems with concentration, muscle cramps or irregular periods.
