The online IQ test has become very popular in recent years - it is not difficult to come across, for example, various online tests that would allow you to get knowledge about our IQ. Read what exactly is IQ, learn how to measure it, and see the importance of determining your IQ value.

What is an IQ test?

The online IQ test comes in many different forms. You can find many free IQ tests on the Internet. Of course, you can perform this type of test, but remember that reliable results can only be obtained by performing standardized tests.

Intelligence can be defined very differently. One of the most frequently used definitions in this case is the one according to which inteligence proves the ability to understand the world around people, and to cope with various tasks or difficulties encountered during their lives. It is therefore absolutely difficult define what intellect is.

Are online IQ tests reliable?

It is no wonder that determinants of human intelligence have been searched for many years. In the past, for example, attempts were made to search for connections between the intellect and specific features of human appearance.

They also looked for the relationship between the structure and function of the human brain and intelligence - attention was paid, inter alia, to the fact that the level of intellect may be influenced by the size and shape of the frontal lobes of the brain, but also by the degree of blood flow through them or the total amount of gray matter in the brain.

Unambiguous conclusions about human intelligence on the basis of the above or other parameters not listed here - at least at present - simply cannot be drawn. At the moment, the most commonly used metric for determining human intelligence is IQ.

If you want to check your IQ, please take the test below.

It is worth adding that it is in the form of a game and not a professional test. A completely reliable result can generally only be obtained when the intellect is assessed with the use of professional tools, and the test result itself is assessed by a specialist, usually a psychologist.

What is IQ?

IQ is an abbreviation of the English term "intelligence quotient", in Polish it translatesget this expression as an intelligence quotient. This indicator has a numerical value and on its basis the intelligence of a given person is determined.

Nowadays it is not difficult to come across tests, the execution of which is to enable the determination of the IQ value, but since when did this parameter begin to be talked about?

Well, reports of IQ appeared in 1905, when - thanks to the works of Alfred Binet and Theodor Simon - the first test was issued to assess the intellect of children. This test included intellectual tasks of various difficulty levels.

Initially, the test was carried out on various children to determine which results were average, below, and above the norm. It was then that the concept of mental age also appeared. It was determined precisely on the basis of the Binet-Simon test result.

How this concept was understood can be explained by a fairly simple example. Well, when a 6-year-old was correctly performing the tasks that a 7-year-old child was typically able to do, his mental age was 7 years. Then, when a 6-year-old child achieved a result corresponding to the abilities of a 5-year-old, his mental age was estimated at 5 years.

The translation of the concept of mental age may seem quite complicated and redundant, but in practice it is needed to explain where the concept of IQ came from. As you can guess, since it is defined as a quotient, some value must be divided by another.

Here comes the concept of William Stern, who was another person who contributed significantly to the development of the entire concept of IQ. It was he who proposed to relate the mental age directly to the calendar age. The researcher suggested that IQ should be calculated by calculating the ratio of the mental age to the age of the examined patient. In order to avoid giving the result of such an operation in fractions, the obtained value was multiplied by 100.

Children are mentioned all the time, but what about adults? Well, the above-mentioned rules for calculating IQ have not come true. It turned out that, just as in the case of adults, there are gradual changes in the number of years, their mental age remains relatively constant throughout their lives - in this case, if they would calculate their IQ in accordance with the rules with which it was done in children, their intelligence quotient would systematically decrease its value.

For this reason, numerous modifications were made, the effect of which was that appropriate intelligence tests for adults appeared. One of the authorities who contributed significantly to their development was the psychologist David Wechsler- the WAIS (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale) test constructed by him is successfully used to assess the intellect of adults to this day.

Is there an IQ standard?

It is assumed that the average person should have an IQ of 100. Results lower than this value are primarily useful in determining the existence of a possible intellectual disability in a human ).

It is diagnosed when the patient's IQ is lower than 70 and the following degrees of intellectual disability are distinguished:

  • light grade: IQ between 69 and 55,
  • moderate level: IQ within 54-35,
  • significant: IQ between 34 and 30,
  • deep: IQ below 20.

It should be emphasized here that the IQ itself is not the only determinant of the human intellect. There is more and more talk now about specific types of intelligence, which are difficult to define with any numerical value - social, emotional or verbal intelligence can be given here as examples.

Famous people with high IQ

Foreign actors boast a high IQ, incl. Sharon Stone (IQ 154), Natalie Portman (IQ 156) and James Woods (IQ 180). However, not only people associated with the film industry have a high IQ - the foreign singer, Shakira, scored 140 in intellect tests.

Representatives of foreign show business are mentioned here all the time, however, there are also stars on our market who boast a high IQ. One of them is Dorota Rabczewska-Stępień (better known as Doda), whose IQ reaches 156.

Quite obviously, the interest in IQ is aroused not only by celebrities, but also by those who have significantly influenced the development of science or industry. For example, we can mention here Albert Einstein, whose IQ reached 162. It has been mentioned one time here that IQ alone does not fully determine the intellectual abilities of a person.

Here, as an example, you can give Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple. Well, his IQ was … 86. There is no need to mention what this man did during his lifetime, but taking into account his IQ, it is clear that yes, the quotientIntelligence can say a lot about a person, but it certainly does not say everything about him.
