Anxiety neurosis is a fairly common form of neurosis. Today one in 50 people has anxiety neurosis. It happens at different stages of life. It is difficult to determine the cause of anxiety neurosis. Both biological, psychological and environmental factors play an important role in it.

What is anxiety neurosis

Generalized anxiety disorder, or anxiety neurosis, is a chronic disease. It reveals the fear of many situations, states and things. The fear is undefined and permanent.

People suffering from anxiety neurosis are actually always afraid. The fear does not leave them even in objectively completely safe, even relaxing situations.

It is characteristic that people suffering from anxiety neurosis do not remember when they felt relaxed. The more indefinite the fear, the greater its intensity.

Anxiety prevents sick people from many activities, it can even prevent their normal functioning. In extreme cases, sick people do not leave the house at all, it even happens that they hallucinate.

Psychological symptoms of anxiety neurosis

Generalized anxiety disorder seriously affects the way you think, behave, feel, and even the way you live.

The following are dominant in his emotional life: anxiety and fear, a sense of threat, a feeling of being on the edge (nerves are strained to the last limit, the patient is on the verge of panic, he has a feeling that something is about to fall on him or he will do something himself something unpredictable), impulsive and aggressive behavior exceeding the norms, panic attacks, irritation, nervousness, impatience, distraction, as well as sadness, uncertainty and problems with concentration.

Anxiety neurosis - physical symptoms of anxiety

Anxiety and strong mental tension cause many somatic symptoms. They are often so disturbing that they increase the level of anxiety even more.

Symptoms that the patient experiences are:

  • dizziness,
  • tightness in the throat,
  • palpitations,
  • excessive sweating,
  • short and shallow breathing,
  • dry mouth,
  • difficulty falling asleep or insomnia,
  • lethargy,
  • tingling and numbness in the limbs,
  • muscle pains.

You may also experience abdominal pain, diarrhea, headache, thirst, frequent urination, painful or irregular periods.

Causes of anxiety neurosis

They are not fully understood and the set of triggers for GAD is slightly different for each patient. It is known that anxiety is generated by disturbances in the secretion of two important neurotransmitters in the brain: serotonin and norepinephrine.

However, apart from biological factors, mental factors are equally important: the lack of a basic sense of security, which develops in very early childhood, emotional conflicts, psychological trauma, situational stress, difficult life situation or poor he alth (e.g. diagnosing a serious illness). ).

Treatment of anxiety neurosis

Two basic measures are used in the treatment of anxiety neurosis: psychotherapy and medications. Sometimes psychotherapy is sufficient, during which the patient learns how not to succumb to attacks of anxiety and black thoughts, how to re-tune negative thinking and change his / her thought patterns.

They can also become aware of the underlying anxiety, identify the situations that make it worse and develop it, and practice other ways of responding to such situations with the therapist. Sometimes, however, it is not possible to start psychological work because the fear is too intense. Then you need to help yourself with pharmacotherapy.
