Stomach ulcer is characterized by the occurrence of peptic ulcers, i.e. defects in the gastric mucosa. This disease can also develop in the duodenum, then we are talking about duodenal ulcer. What are the symptoms of stomach ulcers and can they be successfully treated?
Peptic ulcer diseasemost often manifests itself in the so-called transitional seasons of the year, i.e. spring and autumn. It is associated with changes, mainly hormonal, that take place in the body during this period.
Causes of peptic ulcer disease
- Inflammation of the stomach lining from a bacterium calledHelicobacter pylori
- Chronic use of anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic drugs - commonly referred to as NSAIDs, e.g. aspirin
- Smoking
- Excessive alcohol consumption
- Stress
- Dietary errors, e.g. too long intervals between meals, overuse of spices, food or juice stimulants
Symptoms of peptic ulcer disease
- Constant pain accompanied by a burning sensation; pain in the fovea, appearing 1-2 hours after a meal (stomach ulcer); pain under the right costal arch, 3-5 hours after eating, as well as at night and on an empty stomach (duodenal ulcer)
- Heartburn
- Indigestion
- Nausea and vomiting
- Constipation
- Weight loss
- Fatigue
- Untreated peptic ulcers can cause violent internal bleeding which can be very dangerous
Diagnosis of peptic ulcer disease
The basic diagnostic examination in peptic ulcer disease is endoscopic examination of the upper gastrointestinal tract (gastroscopy), which allows to visualize the ulcer and take samples for the diagnosis ofHelicobacter pyloriinfection and for histopathological examination. Gastroscopy may also reveal changes after peptic ulcer in the form of peptic scar tissue.
Peptic ulcer treatment
Treatment of peptic ulcer disease depends on whether the cause was an infection withHelicobacter pylori , NSAIDs or other factors. InfectionHelicobacter pylorirequires antibiotic treatment. In other cases, drugs that inhibit production are usedhydrochloric acid in the stomach or protect the gastric mucosa. Treatment of peptic ulcer disease should also be supported by natural medicine, i.e. diet and herbs.
