Gamma, GGT, or glutamyltransferase is an enzyme associated with cell membranes. Its concentration informs us about the condition of the liver, pancreas, kidneys and prostate. Check what is the GGT norm and what is evidenced by too low or too high GGT level.

Blood chemistryforGamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT)is used in the diagnosis of liver or biliary disease. Along with other studies:

  • ALAT
  • AspAT
  • bilirubin
  • alkaline phosphatase
  • GGTP
  • LDH
  • Che
  • HBs antigen
  • HCV antibodies

creates the so-called liver profile (the so-called liver tests), allowing to more precisely determine whether the liver and bile ducts have been impaired, and if so, what nature.

GGT (Gamma-glutamyltransferase): norms

In the case of women, the norm for GGT is 10-66 U / l (IU / l), and for men - 18-100 U / l (IU / l).

Too high GGT

Increasing the GGT level to the level from 120 to 1000 U / l may mean:

  • acute or chronic pancreatitis or hepatitis
  • contagious mononucleosis
  • peptic ulcer disease
  • alcoholism

GGT levels also increase with anti-epileptic drugs and some drugs used to treat tuberculosis, such as rifampicin.
