Penis structure

The human penis is composed of two cavernous bodies, a spongy body, a glans, a foreskin and a frenulum. The testicles and epididymis are located at the lower base of the penis.

The spongy body is located on the lower side of the penis and the urethra runs through it, through which urine flows out of the penis. The entire cavernous sinus system is filled with blood due to excitement and enables an erection. The glans ends the penis - when it is resting, it is covered with a skin fold called the foreskin. When erect, the foreskin slides off the glans, making intercourse possible. The glans and foreskin are connected by a frenulum located at the bottom of the penis.

Erect penis, i.e. the erection mechanism

For a man to have intercourse, he needs to get an erection, so the penis must stiffen and enlarge. How does this happen?

The most erogenous areas of the penis are the glans and frenulum.

As a result of the stimulus that causes excitement, the nerve cells that control the smooth muscle of the penis beginproduce nitric oxide. This is necessary for the widening of the blood vessels and the flow of blood into the cavernous bodies of the penis. The outflow of blood is inhibited by the pressure of the arteries on the emissary veins, thanks to which the man can maintain an erection and copulation is possible. In the phase of peak excitement, semen ejaculates from the penis simultaneously with the orgasm.

When the penis drops too early, it indicates erection problems, which in most cases are caused by disease factors (e.g. hypertension, atherosclerosis, diabetes, kidney and liver diseases), although they may also result from mental block (then we are dealing with psychogenic impotence).

Penile size

Average Penis Length

There have been many studies so far to determine the average length of a male member in the entire population. Most of them prove that the average length of an erect penis is approx.13-16 centimeters . At rest it is approx.8-11 cm . African American members tend to be larger than average, while Asian penises are smaller.

Penis size is obtained by measuring the erect penis from base to tip on the dorsal side. It is a mistake to measure the penis when it is resting, because even small penises can increase their size by 100% during an erection.

What's more - it has been proven that the larger the penis at rest, the smaller the increase in its size during erection (usually 60%). This information can be comforting for men who are worried about their size when the penis is flaccid. It is also a warning for women not to judge their partner's qualities too hastily, because the final effect may surprise them!

Average Penis Circumference

In order to assess the size of the penis, it is also necessary to measure its circumference. This is done by measuring the penis in three places: just below the glans, at the base and in the middle (it must be erect). The average is calculated from the results obtained. According to statistics, the average circumference of a male member is11-14 cm .

Worth knowing

Only 1% of men have limbs larger than 20 cm

In 2015, the results of research conducted by a team of scientists led by prof. David Veale, which were to end speculation about the average size of a male member once and for all. Doctors in their publicationcompiled data from 17 different scientific papers, the authors of which measured members of a total of 15,521 men of different ages and races. The results were as follows:

  • Average length of the penis overhang: 9.16 cm.
  • Average length of an erect penis: 13.12 cm.
  • Average circumference of the penis overhang: 9.31 cm.
  • Average erectile circumference of the penis: 11.66 cm.

When asked about the possibility of penis enlargement with ointments or pills, prof. Veale unequivocally replied that such methods were ineffective. He also added that only 2% of men have limbs 17-18 cm in size and only 1% have a penis of 20 cm.

Penis size and women's sensations

The size of the penis does not matter as much for women as men think. A 2005 study showed that 70% of women are very satisfied with the size of their partner's penis, and only 6% declared that they would like their man's penis to be bigger.

Penile size doesn't have a great deal of influence on women's sexual experiences - this is due to women's physiology. Only the initial 10 cm of the vagina is the most sensitive to stimulation - and almost every man's penis achieves more when erected. Overall, penetration is not the type of stimulus that women like best. Most of them achieve orgasm not by intercourse, but by caressing the clitoris and the surrounding erogenous zones.

Penile diseases

Diseases that affect the male penis are:

  • phimosis,
  • shampoo,
  • mycosis of the penis,
  • urethritis,
  • Peyronie's disease,
  • premature ejaculation,
  • penile fracture,
  • penile cancer,
  • impotence,
  • sexually transmitted diseases (syphilis, gonorrhea, HIV, chlamydia).
