The male midlife crisis emerges from beyond the horizon, like a dangerous reef, when adolescent children do not absorb that much anymore, the professional position is stable and it should seem that it will only get better. Is the midlife crisis a common occurrence? How long does it last and what are the symptoms of midlife crisis in a man over 40?

Midlife crisisoccurs when we realize that the seemingly unlimited time range with which you can do whatever you want, but it has already happened reduce. As half of life passes, that perspective changes. We slowly realize that not everything will be achieved. Instead of asking "What else can I do in my life?", It says: "What else can I do?"

How is the midlife crisis manifested?

The midlife crisis in a mancan start innocently - with a change in subjective perception of time - a year that is unimaginably long for a child, seems much shorter to an adult. There are other priorities. The developmental task of adolescents is to create a coherent sense of identity and belonging to a peer group. In young adults (up to 25 years of age), it is creating close ties with other people, starting a family. Later, the needs of taking care of other people, not only oneself, come to the fore. And at the halfway point, a person faces the dilemma: "What should I do next in life? What should I do? Do I take care of myself for pleasures and fun? ". If the scales of egoism prevail, then sooner or later life enters a phase of stagnation and emptiness and themidlife crisis .

Focusing on himself makes a man stop caring for his close people, he lives as if he no longer cares about anyone but himself. Comfort, sometimes laziness, the inability to sacrifice or effort come to the fore. Since life only for pleasure leads sooner or later to a feeling of emptiness, addictions and mental ailments may develop on this background.

Sometimes a midlife crisis manifests itself in the fact that this, bored with a stable life, finds an unusual hobby (bungee, fast motorbike) orgoes looking for "real life". It happens that a revolution in life consists in marrying a much younger woman in order to start all over again.

Worth knowing

Midlife crisis in monkeys

Researchers from the University of Edinburgh and the University of Warwick have proven that midlife crisis also occurs … in chimpanzees and orangutans. As it is not the easiest way to determine the degree of happiness in monkeys, as many as 500 individuals living in 5 countries were observed. The monkeys were watched by their keepers, scientists and volunteers. It turned out that in the middle of their lives they are much less satisfied with him than in their youth and old age. The results of the study may therefore indicate that the midlife crisis is due to evolution, and not caused by the right people's problems, such as divorce, credit or the necessity to change the car to a new one.

Symptoms of the Midlife Crisis

The American psychologist Homer R. Figler even made a breakdown of symptoms that indicate an impending midlife crisis. There are 10 of them:

1.General state of dissatisfaction.

2.Loss of sense of security (e.g. due to work, the condition of your marriage).

3.Less job satisfaction.

4.Worry that something terrible is about to happen.

5.Constant indecision.

6.Feeling of conflict between who we are now and who we planned that we will be - the belief that we have not achieved our old goals, dreams and that there is less time to do so than before.

7.Depression may even result from the above point.

8.Lack of patience, oversensitivity, constant irritation.

9.Difficulty concentrating, focusing on one task.

Midlife crisis in men - when is it most likely?

Is there any group of men particularly vulnerable to choosing this life? Psychologists agree: we are burdened by the past. If someone has not succeeded in creating a coherent sense of identity during adolescence, still does not know who he is and does not accept himself, then attempts to establish really deep and satisfying relationships with the other person have failed, then the risk of concentrating onlyon himself grows significantly.

Is the midlife crisis in a man a common problem?

The term "midlife crisis" was first coined by Canadian psychologist Elliott Jacques in the 1960s. Do men go through amidlife crisisoften? We can verify this and, for example, ask if they experience internal anxiety, dissatisfaction at work or marriage, do they feel a loss of strength or change in their self-esteem, etc. indicate the existence of a common crisis. You can also check whether the number of divorces, alcoholism and depression increases in middle age.

Well, all studies show that nothing extraordinary happens in men "at the halfway point". So it seems that a characterological change after the age of 40 may occur, but definitely not in all men. In fact, the midlife crisis affects only about 5% of people. men, mainly those with higher education. These men between the ages of 40 and 49 have more alcohol problems, and take more sleeping pills and sedatives than before and after. They also talk more often about apathy and less about enthusiasm in life. There are, however, a definite minority of them.

Important

How long does the midlife crisis last?

The midlife crisis in men lasts on average from 3 to even 10 years and affects men between the ages of 45 and 64.

How to deal with the midlife crisis?

1. Remember that you still have goalsahead of you - you can achieve those you planned to meet in your youth - nothing is lost yet - you can also define completely new goals to be fulfilled. After all, middle age is only half your life.

2. Try to accept your age- being middle-aged doesn't have to be associated only with negative feelings. After all, now you are a man much more experienced than you used to be, you no longer make decisions so hastily, you enjoy a better financial situation and respect than when you were 20.

3. Instead of focusing on the negatives, think about what you did- instead of thinking about how by 45 you failed to become a pilot and the chances of doing so decrease with age, think about the positives: whether you have a successful relationship, happy and smart children, a stable position at work. Ask yourself whether it is worth introducing sudden and hasty changes in this state developed over the years.
