Seborrheic warts are lumpy skin growths that can appear anywhere on the body. Although their appearance is very distinctive, they can be confused with other skin lesions, such as skin cancer. What do seborrheic warts look like? What are the reasons for their formation? How to treat and remove these unsightly skin lesions?

Seborrheic warts(basal cell papillomas) arebenign skin lesionsthat appear anywhere on the body, although they are usually located in within the trunk, upper limbs, face (includingon the eyelids ) and the hairy scalp. These lesions are round and have the character of keratinizing growths.

Seborrheic warts - causes

The causes of seborrheic warts are unknown. They are known not to be caused by HPV papillomavirus, although the name may suggest it. Thus, a seborrheic wart has nothing to do with an epidermal lesion such askurzajkaand other types of warts. However, there are certain factors that predispose to the formation of seborrheic warts:

  • age - warts most often appear in people over 35, in larger numbers, usually over a dozen;
  • genetic predisposition - presence of seborrheic warts or other epidermal moles in close family members;
  • diseases accompanied by a disorder of skin keratosis or sebum production.

What does a seborrhoeic wart look like?

Seborrhoeic wart is a characteristic, protruding skin eruption that looks like a mushroom. Nevertheless, it can be confused with other skin changes, e.g. actinic keratosis or some malignant neoplastic changes (mainly skin melanoma). Here are the features that distinguish a seborrheic wart from other skin lesions:

  1. It is well demarcated from he althy skin, creating the impression of being applied to its surface.
  2. Its size ranges from a few millimeters to several centimeters.
  3. On the surface of the nipple, there are numerous depressions containing an accumulated mass of keratinized epidermal cells and sebum.
  4. Depending on the stage of development, the color of the nipple varies between a color similar to he althy skin and a jet-black color, which is not a sign ofmelanoma.

Warts are not accompanied by symptoms such as:

  • pain,
  • pruritus,
  • baking.

The exception is mechanical irritation, e.g. when changing clothes.

Important

Seborrhoeic wartsare mild skin lesions. This means that it is not possible for them to turn into cancer cells and pose a he alth risk. Seborrheic warts are only an aesthetic problem. Especially when they are located within the facial skin.

Seborrheic warts - treatment. How to remove a seborrheic wart?

If seborrheic warts aren't causing any problems, they don't need treatment. However, for aesthetic reasons, they can be removed and there are no contraindications for this.

Seborrheic wart - cryotherapy

One of themethods of removing seborrheic wartsis cryotherapy, i.e. freezing skin lesions with liquid nitrogen. As a result of the very low temperature, the nipple dies.

After a few days after the treatment, the color of the nipple changes to black, and the skin lesion takes the form of a scab, which falls off the surface of the skin after a month. Unfortunately, the procedure carries the risk of an unsightly scar.

Price: up to PLN 50 to PLN 100 (depending on the number and size of the lesions).

Seborrheic wart - IPL laser

Another method of removing seborrheic warts is the IPL laser, which completely burns the skin lesion, leaving a small, concave wound. A scab forms within a few days of the procedure, which falls off after 2-3 weeks. The treatment can also leave a scar on the body, but it is practically invisible.

Price: PLN 100-150 for removing one nipple.

Seborrhoeic wart - curettage, i.e. surgical treatment

Removal of skin lesions by surgical curettage involves removal of the wart at the level of the epidermis.

The price of the treatment depends on the number and size of lesions (usually from 100 to 300 PLN).
