Postpartumis, in short, the time when the body returns to the state it was before pregnancy. It begins with the birth of the placenta and usually lasts six weeks. What is happening at this time? In puerperium, incl. lactation begins, postpartum wounds of the uterus, resulting from detachment of the placenta, heal, and the uterus itself contracts to reach its pre-pregnancy size. During the latter process, the so-called maternal faeces (lochia). For the first two weeks, they resemble a heavy, long-lasting period.Bleedinggradually fades away: at the end of the second week after giving birth, the faeces are dirty yellow, and a week later - grayish. They contain not only blood and tissue fragments, but also a lot of dangerous microorganisms (staphylococcus, streptococci, coliform bacteria). And it is because of them that in the postpartum period the slogan "clean means he althy" takes on a new meaning. During this period, the uterus resembles a large, healing wound, neglect ofintimate hygienecan therefore lead to very unpleasant complications.

Postpartum hygiene: clean means he althy

The rules of intimate hygiene in the puerperium are simple: wash the perineum as often as possible, always after each insert change and after visiting the toilet. All intimate hygiene gels and lotions, Biały Jeleń gray soap, and boiled water with an anti-inflammatory antiseptic dissolved in it are allowed. Such preparations are available in pharmacies without a prescription. Some of them, such as Tantum Rosa, additionally reduce the pain in the perineum that occurs after natural childbirth, because they contain local painkillers (note: they can be used at most once or twice a day). It is important not only what you wash yourself out with, but also how you do it. Until the bleeding has stopped and the faeces has stopped, forget about bathing. Not only because of the possibility of infection: a warm water bath dilates blood vessels, which can increase the intensity of bleeding. Take a shower or a bidet. As a last resort, in a bowl with warm, boiled water (but then prepare a jug of water in advance to rinse the perineum).anus, never the other way around. Dry the perineum with a disposable towel - ordinary, even freshly washed ones, contain too many microorganisms. Do not rub the skin with a towel, apply it gently. In the first days after giving birth, when you are very sore, you can use a hair dryer with the lowest speed.

Postpartum - what should you know about it?

Wearing appropriate underwear is as important as regular washing. It should be airy, preferably cotton. Avoid tights and do not wear tight, air-tight panties. For the first days after giving birth, doctors recommend plain cotton panties.

Some people advise you not to put them on when you lie down: put only a foil liner on the sheet (they are available in pharmacies), a towel on it, and a maxi sanitary napkin under the bottom (it's important that it does not touch the perineum). All this so that the access of air accelerates the healing of the perineum. It is worth doing such airing several times a day. When you get up, wear maxi pads or special postpartum pads (available in pharmacies). However, tampons must not be used.

Remember

» Wash your hands thoroughly after each change of the insert to avoid transferring bacteria to other areas of the body or to the newborn.

» Also wash your hands after washing and drying the perineum.

» Dirty sanitary towels are an ideal breeding ground for bacteria, so make sure to remove them from the apartment as soon as possible.

» If you are breastfeeding, change the inserts before each feeding.

» When the baby sucks on the breast, the uterus contracts rhythmically and the bleeding is more profuse.

» If, despite proper hygiene, you are disturbed by the smell or color of faeces, contact your doctor.
