Cystographyisbladder examination, performed using X-rays and contrast.X-ray of the bladderallows you to assess the size and shape of the bladder. It also provides information on abnormalities in the functioning of the bladder.
Cystography - indications for the examination
The indications for the cystography are:
- birth defects of the urinary system
- bladder or urethral injuries
- suspicion of diverticula or bladder tumors
- urinary incontinence (also in children who wet at night)
- reverse drainage of urine from the bladder into the ureters (the so-called vesicoureteral reflux)
The tests are not performed on people allergic to the contrast agent, in the case of acute urinary tract infection and pregnancy.
Cystography - how to prepare?
The bladder should be emptied just before the examination.
Cystography - what is it?
The patient is placed supine on the table of the X-ray machine. A catheter is then inserted into the bladder through which the contrast medium is injected until the patient feels a strong pressure on the bladder (this means that the bladder is well filled). Then X-rays of the bladder are taken, often in several body positions and projections. The catheter is removed from the bladder.
