Jatrogenia are actions of a doctor (or other he alth care professional), which, by definition, should lead to the improvement of the patient's he alth. If these effects are harmful, it means that the doctor is making an iatrogenic error (iatropathogenia) and the resulting diseases are iatrogenic diseases. We explain with examples what errors and iatrogenic diseases are.

Jatrogenia( iatros- doctor, genesisdating) are actions of a doctor or other he alth care professional, which by definition should lead to the improvement of the patient's he alth.

Iatrogenic errors are actions of a physician or other members of the he althcare professional that harm the he alth of the patient.

If these actions are harmful to his he alth, it means that the doctor (or another member of the medical staff) is committing an iatrogenic error(jatropathogenia ). Iatrogenic errors ( iatrogenic factors ) can worsen the underlying disease, extend treatment time, develop new diseases (the so-callediatrogenic diseases ), disability, and even the patient's death. Iatrogenic errors can lead to the deterioration of the patient's he alth not only physically but also mentally. Mental illnesses may even develop, e.g. anxiety neuroses, phobias.

Jatrogenia - transmitting and receiving information

Iatrogenic errors may arise in the doctor (or other he alth care professional) - patient relationship. Iatrogenic errors include improper attitude towards the patient and improper communication with him. The iatrogenic error will therefore be:

  • criticizing, evaluating and blaming the patient by a doctor, nurse, etc.
  • use of incomprehensible language, unclear and imprecise information to the patient (misunderstood information may be perceived as a threat and cause unjustified anxiety to the patient)

It will be an iatrogenic error to use incomprehensible language, inform the patient unclearly about his he alth or not inform him at all.

  • not informing the patient about his he alth (lack of information may provoke strong anxiety in the patient and deteriorate his well-being)
  • scaring the patient to motivate the patient
  • subjecttreating the patient - conducting important conversations with the patient in the presence of bystanders, etc.

Such actions may lead to a change in the patient's behavior, and further to disruptions in the treatment process and, as a result, to the deterioration of his he alth.

Jatrogenia - iatrogenic errors during medical examination

  • improperly performed test
  • ordering unnecessarily more and more new, numerous additional tests, which leads to awakening or intensifying the patient's fear for their he alth
  • examining the patient in front of other people, disregarding his feeling of embarrassment and embarrassment

Jatrogenia - iatrogenic errors during treatment

  • inadequate drug administration, sometimes leading to pharmacomania. This risk occurs when two or more drugs are administered simultaneously. Undesirable drug interactions may occur, consisting in the weakening or intensification of their effect, or the emergence of toxic symptoms (drug iatrogenia)
  • development of a new disease (iatrogenic disease) as a result of treatment of the primary disease
  • performing surgery or other treatment without appropriate indications

Jatrogenia - iatrogenic errors during hospitalization

An iatrogenic error in a hospital may be committed, among others, by a nurse who neglects her duties. For example, when caring for an unconscious patient. The consequences may be chafing, bedsores, dislocation of joints (especially shoulder joints), rupture or damage to muscles and tendons, and even damage to the eyeballs. Failure to follow good hygiene practices by doctors and nurses can also lead to infection.

Examples of iatrogenic errors that may appear during hospitalization include depriving the patient of sleep and rest (e.g. picking up the patient at 5 am to measure the temperature), loud conversations of the staff, slamming doors, etc.
