Where to start learning to skateboard? From buying a skateboard! And then you just need to train a lot and remember about bent legs (because it's easier to keep your balance). It is worth learning slowly to push off, move and more complicated elements on a skateboard - the slower, the more precisely you will make the move. When you learn to do something slowly, it is much easier to repeat it at a faster pace.

Skateboarding: buy a decent board

You can't buy a good board in a supermarket. If you want to have fun, go to a professional skate shop, where a specialist will choose the width of the board according to your height, foot length, etc.

Check: The first skateboard - which one to choose?

Skateboarding: Pushing

Before you start learning to push off and move on, check if you can keep your balance on the board. Contrary to appearances, it is not that easy, because the board moves forward and backward. Once you get used to it, you can start learning to push off.

First, learn the skate styles:

  • regular: left leg is in front, right leg is in back. We push off with our right leg;
  • goofy: right leg is in front, left leg is in back. We push off with our left leg;
  • mongo regular: left leg is in front, right leg is behind. We push off with our left leg;
  • mongo goofy: the right leg is in the front, the left leg is in the back. We push off with our right leg.

A beginner should start with a regular or goofy style. Place the front leg between the center of the board and its nose (placed too close may tilt the board forward), and the right supply on the back. Bend your knees, get your balance and start pushing your back leg back.

Skateboarding: turning frontside / backside

Twisting is the transfer of weight from your toes to your heels as you ride. When you turn right, you press harder on the right side, and when you want to turn left, you press the left side of the board. When the board turns in the right direction, reduce the pressure. Additionally, help yourself by balancing your body in the right direction.

Calm and gentle pressure will make the board turn slowly. If we use force quickly and vigorously, the board may even turn back.

Braking onskateboarding

Anyone who rides can develop an individual braking method that also expresses his driving style. However, at the beginning, the easiest way to brake is to press the tail firmly so that the board is almost vertical, and then grab it with your hand.

Skateboarding: ollie

Ollie is a basic trick in skateboarding. It opens the gate to more complicated tricks, such as slides or grinds.

Ollie is best trained on the move. When riding on a board, leave the toes of the rear foot on the tail (the rest of the foot is outside the board) and hit the end of the board hard on the ground (so that the impact sound is heard). Quickly jump up and level the board with the front foot flying up. We try to stay in this position as long as possible, because the height of the ollie depends on it.

When training ollie you have to be patient - it may take up to two months before you finally succeed.

Skateboarding: pads and helmet

Protectors not only really protect against cuts, abrasions and even fractures, but also facilitate breaking the mental barrier to doing tricks. In many cases, after several months of practicing a trick, it still fails. The obstacle is not the lack of technical preparation or poor equipment, but … fear! And it is much easier to overcome him knowing that you are safe.

The most important elements protecting a skater are a helmet (protects against head injuries) and elbow and knee pads. In addition, you can also invest in accessories that protect the shins or the spine.

Skateboarding: falls

When you start your adventure with a skateboard, you have to be prepared for falls. It's part of the sport, in a way. But it depends on how we fall if we hurt ourselves.

If you fall at high speed, under no circumstances should you fall on your hands - trying to support yourself. Causing this to happen creates a high probability of fractures. It will be much safer in this case to fall on the largest possible surface of the body, i.e. on the entire side.

At low speed, you can quickly jump off the skateboard and thus save yourself from falling. Another method is to squat, which will make the fall less painful as it started from a low height.
