It is not dangerous equipment, but if we do not follow basic safety measures, such as the speed limit, driving in a designated area or prudence, we may get an unnecessary injury or cause an accident.

Those who drive prudently can successfully afford to buy a scooter or give it as a gift to, for example, their child. However, before we decide to buy such a scooter, it is worth checking the opinions about the brand and paying attention to parameters such as speed, power, endurance, purpose or even general workmanship and appearance. There are a lot of models on the market, and each of them is different, so everyone can easily choose the electric scooter they dream of.

Electric scooter - how it works

An electric scooter is a two-wheeled, three-wheeled, or even four-wheeled, small electric vehicle known as a two-wheeler. Under Polish law, an electric scooter falls under the definition of a moped, although it differs significantly from it. The maximum speed of this equipment reaches up to 45 km / h, therefore, according to the regulations, it is not allowed to move on the street, but only - on the pavement and designated paths.

The scooter rides thanks to the electric drive, which works via a battery. It consists of a bearing, steering wheel, wheels, battery and brake. It looks like a standard scooter powered by the power of legs, but in practice it is very muchdifferent from it.

Electric scooter - advantages and disadvantages

The electric scooter certainly brings a lot of fun, and riding it is an interesting way to spend your free time. However, it is worth taking an objective look at the electric scooter and learn about its advantages and disadvantages.

Let's start with the positive aspects of riding an electric scooter. The big advantage of this type of equipment is the fact that moving with it does not require any work from us. All we have to do is steer the scooter and dose its speed. The electric scooter is a very convenient means of transport.

The feature of the electric scooter is its light weight, which makes it possible to take it virtually anywhere. In every large city, we can successfully find an electric scooter intended for individual rental, and the fact that it can be left at many positions makes the electric scooter very comfortable and easy. What's more, an electric scooter can be an interesting gift idea, and the fact that the interest in electric scooters is constantly growing only adds to its attractiveness.

In the topic of electric scooters, it is also worth highlighting a few disadvantages of this equipment.

  • First of all, riding an electric scooter does not affect our condition or physical endurance in any way. So riding an electric scooter cannot be considered a sport or an effective physical activity. For this purpose, it is better to choose a bike ride or even a standard scooter.
  • The second disadvantage is the price of electric scooters, and because it is not cheap equipment (on average it costs about PLN 1,300), not everyone can afford it.
  • Another disadvantage of electric scooters is that you need to recharge them regularly.
  • It is also worth mentioning that an electric scooter can become a dangerous piece of equipment if we do not take the necessary precautions.
Note: accidents!

There has been an increase in the number of people using electric scooters in Poland for a year. At the same time, the number of people injured in collisions caused by riding electric scooters is growing.

Small wheels and high speed cause frequent overturns and collisions. More and more people who use scooters and pedestrians who were involved in a scooter accident go to hospitals. The most common injuries of these people are skin abrasions, but they can also be much more serious, such as head injuries (concussion, hematomas) and motor organs.

The largest number of victims of accidents on a scooter are people aged 35-50 who get on scooters without the basicthe ability to use a means of transport that develops high speed on uneven, and above all full of other road users, pavements. The cause of serious injuries is, first of all, the lack of protection in the form of helmets, knee pads and elbow pads, and additionally frequent bravado and lack of imagination of the drivers.

Electric scooter - how to choose the best scooter

When choosing an electric scooter, you should pay attention to, among others, parameters such as: wheels, bearing, drive, frame, steering wheel and brake.

  • Wheels - most scooters have two wheels, but you can also find ones with three or four wheels. Those with more wheels will keep the balance better, so they can certainly be dedicated to children. Three-wheeled scooters are divided into two groups: with two wheels at the front or two wheels at the rear. Four-wheeled scooters are best for long journeys and riding over uneven terrain.
The most common sizes of circles are those with a diameter of less than 12 centimeters. Scooters with such wheels work well for recreational as well as more dynamic and varied riding. It is also worth paying attention to the hardness of the wheels, which is described by numerical parameters falling under the letter A. The higher the parameter, the greater the hardness of the wheels. Medium-hard wheels are the best for recreational and more demanding riding. On the other hand, the wheels with a flat profile, which is another important parameter, are intended for more extreme riding. Similarly, round wheels will be perfect for recreational riding.
  • Bearing - the most durable bearing is the one resistant to overload. So let's pay attention to the quality of the bearing and the possible possibility of later replacement.
  • Drive - if we want to use the electric scooter as a permanent means of transport, e.g. for commuting to work, we should choose those with a motor drive with an electric motor.
  • Frame - the frame should be as solid as possible, as it holds the scooter user. It is worth choosing models that are made of solid plastics.
  • Steering wheel - the steering wheel must be adjustable so that it can be adjusted to individual preferences. It is worth choosing scooters with aluminum handlebars, because they are much lighter than those made of steel.
  • Brake - the brakes can be divided into spring-loaded and flexible brakes, and some models also have a handbrake, which is mounted on the steering wheel.

Electric scooter - what to consider when buying

1. Engine power. This is a very important parameter and should be adjusted to the equipment user and his expectations. For children, scooters with a weaker engine power are recommended so that children can use the equipment safely. When it comes to the most common motor power, these are the following parameters: 250W, 350W and 500W.

2. Wheel size.In this case, the Electric scooter also needs to be adjusted to the rider. Children should have scooters with smaller wheels, because riding such equipment is much easier. On the other hand, large wheels absorb the ground better, but on the other hand, such equipment is more difficult to steer.

3. Maximum load. The maximum load of the Electric scooter is a very important criterion when selecting equipment. It is important to choose the right equipment options for your weight in order to avoid overloading and dangerous accidents.

4. Maximum speed. This parameter tells us how much a given electric scooter model can reach the maximum speed after accelerating the equipment. Adults can choose scooters that travel at speeds of up to 45 km / h, while for children, scooters at speeds of up to 20 km / h are recommended.

5. Maximum working time after charging. The longer the scooter's working time and the more powerful the battery, the longer we can use the selected equipment. If you intend to ride a scooter short distances, it is not necessary to buy a scooter with a long operating time after being charged.

6. Brand. The most popular brands of electric scooters include Xiaomi, Skymaster, Goclever and Motus. Before choosing a given model, it is worth getting acquainted with the opinions about the brand and the parameters of a specific scooter.

7. Price.Examples of prices for adult scooters are: Motus scooters PLN 899-1799, Globber scooter PLN 1749, XIAOMI scooter PLN 1699. These are approximate prices and depend on the store where we buy the scooter. On the other hand, a scooter for children costs from about 300 PLN to 1000 PLN.

8. Additional equipment. Some scooters can be equipped with a saddle, which increases the comfort of riding, especially on longer routes. Another interesting feature are the foot platforms that extend parallel and perpendicular to the direction of travel.

Electric scooter - legal regulations

The electric scooter is quite a big problem for the law. So far, no specific legal regulations regarding driving on small means of transport have been established.

The Road Traffic Act of 1997 informs us that a scooter userelectricity should be treated as a pedestrian. This means that it cannot move on streets, public roads and bicycle paths, but only on the pavement or closed lanes. If there is no sidewalk, the user of the scooter should use the shoulder or the extreme part of the road.

Failure to comply with the regulations or ignorance of them may result in a financial pen alty of 20 to 500 zlotys.

Do you know that…

In response to alarming statistics on accidents and collisions involving electric scooters, the Ministry of Infrastructure has promised to address this legal loophole and introduce appropriate regulations in the spring of 2022.
