It's winter so it must be cold and the conditions for cycling are less favorable. If you plan to make your bike fall into hibernation, create good conditions for it - whether in the apartment or outside.

What to do with the bike in winter when the weather is not favorable and we are not planning to ride it? Put it in the garden, garage, basement, attic or apartment? What if we don't have free storage space? Check how to "winter" a bike so that it does not get damaged.

Your bike will live longer indoors

If we only have such a possibility, let's protect our bike against the negative influence of weather conditions.

- Rain, snow, frost, temperature changes not only make the bike corrosion over time. When it rains on the equipment, water enters the drive, bearing, or between the slots in the chain, and freezing of these droplets can cause some components to deteriorate. Metal fragments will undoubtedly be exposed to corrosion and rust, will become more brittle and prone to damage later on. In addition, if we want to save ourselves time and expenses on preparing it for driving in spring, let's take care of a dry place - be it in an apartment, house, garage or storage room. This will extend the life of our bike. Even a higher balcony without buildings does not guarantee that the equipment will remain dry On the other hand - avoid staircases or low balconies - these are the places most vulnerable to theft - advises Bogdan Czarnota, coach and competitor of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles MTB Team, the current Polish mountain biking champion masters category.

Before winter, it is also worth taking care of your equipment: lubricate and protect the chain, bottom bracket, headset, wheel bearings and, in the case of more professional bikes, suspension and shock absorbers with a damper.

Luggage? Only when we do not drive in winter

These are more and more popular solutions in larger cities. Prices for renting space in special warehouses are usually about PLN 20-30 per month. This is a reasonable price, but the weather conditions in December or January can surprise you enough that you will be able to go for a quick training session. Then, instead of reaching for the equipment, you have to go to the storage room. As long as it is open at this time.

Bike in the garage, i.e.ideal situation

A great convenience for cyclists is a garage or a basement - whoever has, knows. Especially when there is no time, it is not a problem to quickly put a muddy or wet bike after a ride, and what's more, we do not dirty the apartment.

- Nevertheless, it is worth taking care of a separate space where our two-wheeler will be located, so as not to squeeze through trying to go to the car. Using the garage for storage should increase our comfort, and not make the bicycle a piece of furniture that moves every move - adds Bogdan Czarnota.

Garden garages, which can accommodate not only the bicycle itself, but also any equipment or even garden equipment such as: rakes, spades, mowers, are also becoming more and more popular. If we have concerns about moisture appearing in a given place, a special cover will come in handy.

Smaller space means more creativity

We have less freedom in an apartment or studio. In addition, a perfectly clean bike only looks like in the pictures. To keep the apartment tidy, it will be crucial to paint the walls with abrasive paint - the backrest or touching the bicycle will not cause unsightly stains. Mud or water can drip from the bike, so we should also secure the floor, e.g. by unfolding an old towel.

Using the appropriate accessories will save additional space:

  • Hooks allow you to hang the bike in an upright position, which can be a great convenience. When screwing the hooks, make sure you have enough space. In turn, the stand will be better for the garage, and additionally it will be useful for maintenance or repair of the bike;
  • Bicycle furniture, such as a closed wardrobe, is a perfect solution that will separate the two-wheeler from the rest of the apartment and prevent the spread of mud. This type of furniture also allows you to store other accessories, such as helmets, water bottles, cycling shoes or clothing. Anyone who comes back from training would like to put away small items such as a phone, keys, headphones in one proven place - bicycle furniture usually solves this problem.

Can a bicycle suspended or placed in a showroom be an element of interior design? This is an interesting solution, but very impractical. The prices of such products start from several dozen zlotys, but remember to choose the right hangers and hooks for the weight of your bike.
