Diet in hypothyroidism: lots of iodine

This element is necessary for the proper functioning of the body. It takes part in the production of thyroid hormones: thyroxine and triiodothyronine, which in a multidirectional way affect the growth and development of the system, as well as its metabolism (metabolism).

The body needs approx. 160 μg of iodine daily (180-200 μg if you are pregnant or breastfeeding). It should be provided with food or by the inhalation route. The best sources of it are undoubtedly sea fish and seafood - in Poland the average content of this element in fish is (per 100 g of product): cod 110 μg, salmon 44 μg, flatfish 52 μg, smoked mackerel 40 μg, herring 30 μg.

It is the only natural and reliable source of iodine in food, as the content of iodine in vegetables, fruits, and grain and dairy products is variable and highly localizedgrowing or breeding. When the soil is low in iodine, the plants growing on it will also contain little iodine. In turn, the iodine content in milk and dairy products depends on its presence in the feed that the cows are fed.

In order to provide this deficient ingredient in many countries, s alt is iodized, it is added to ready-made products, supplemented with preparations containing iodine, especially in relation to the most vulnerable people (mainly pregnant women), and iodine is also used animal feed.

The source of iodine can also be some species of mineral waters, so it is worth checking the label if the given mineral water contains iodine and introducing it into your daily diet.

Some foods contain goiters that may limit the absorption of iodine from foods. These include:

  • cabbage,
  • cauliflower,
  • Brussels sprouts,
  • soybeans,
  • turnips,
  • swedish.

This applies primarily to raw vegetables. Cooking reduces the content of these harmful substances by over 30%. People who have developed simple goitre or have been diagnosed with iodine deficiency should significantly reduce their consumption of these vegetables, as well as peanuts and mustard seeds (they are also rich in goitrein substances).

Diet in hypothyroidism: protein is essential

Protein should account for 15% of all calories you consume. Such a level in the diet guarantees a high metabolic rate. In addition, the protein stimulates the production of growth hormone responsible for fat burning. The basis of the diet in hypothyroidism is to increase the daily supply of protein to the level of 80-100 g. With this amount, however, you must remember to drink at least 1.5 liters of mineral water (kidney protection).
