Dental implants are placed in order to fill the losses in the patient's natural teeth. An ideal dental implant should be durable, functional and not stand out with its color against natural teeth. It should be installed by a dentist with experience and appropriate qualifications. Check what the installation of dental implants looks like and how to choose a specialist who will perform the procedure professionally.

Dental implantis an artificial root - an implant made of titanium, which is the size of a natural root. It is on its basis that an artificial tooth, that is, a crown, is placed. However, the number of implants does not always have to equal the number of missing teeth. You can perform a multi-point implantation and rest all missing teeth on it. In some cases, even two implants are enough to support the entire prosthesis on them.

Crown, or artificial tooth

A prosthetic crownis an artificial tooth attached to implants, where it functions as a tooth, or to existing teeth to hide any damage. A crown is also placed to protect a weak tooth against fracture, to repair a broken tooth, to fix a bridge or to cover a tooth after root canal treatment. Currently, different types of crowns are available in dental offices:

  • metal crownis made of various metal alloys. Unfortunately, it is not very aesthetic because it never has a natural tooth color;
  • acrylic crownis made of acrylic in the color of natural teeth. Its disadvantage is instability, therefore it is used as a temporary supplement;
  • metal crown veneered with acrylicon the front side is covered with acrylic in the color of natural teeth; nowadays it is rarely used because it is not very aesthetic and not durable;
  • ceramic crownis made of porcelain, very aesthetic because its color does not differ from the color of natural teeth. Its only drawback is the high price;
  • metal crown veneered with porcelain- the metal crown is entirely covered with porcelain and it imitates natural teeth very well. It is the most commonly used prosthetic crown.
  • zirconium crown- has a very high strength and high light transmittance - prosthetic restorations retain their propertiesoptical natural teeth.

The crown is a permanent restoration, therefore it can only be removed by a dentist.

What does the procedure for placing dental implants look like?

The procedure of placing dental implants consists of three stages:

  • implant placement,
  • healing screw inserted,
  • fixing the artificial tooth

Implant insertion: STAGE ONE

The first stage is a surgical procedure that involves drilling a hole in the bone (specifically in the alveolar process) in order to insert the implant.

A pantomographic picture is taken before the implant insertion. On its basis, the doctor determines whether the amount of bone tissue in the gum is sufficient to insert the implant. If it turns out that bone loss has occurred as a result of tooth and root loss, the doctor may decide to perform guided bone regeneration (bone augmentation), a surgical procedure that involves creating the required amount of bone tissue for future dental implants. The implant placement is performed under local anesthesia or under general anesthesia. The procedure is painless and takes from 30 minutes to 2 hours. After inserting the implant, the surgeon makes sure that its position is stable and sutures the wound. After the procedure, the implant is not visible in the oral cavity.

During the wound healing period, osseointegration occurs, i.e. direct fusion of the artificial root with the bone, which lasts about 3 months (for implants in the mandible) or 6 months (for implants in the jaw). This difference is due to the different bone structure of the maxilla and mandible. In the process of osseointegration, oxygen contained in bone tissue cells forms a layer of titanium dioxide on the implant surface. Then, new bone tissue is deposited on the resulting coating, which is the proper fixation of the implant. Thanks to this process, the body does not treat the implanted implant as a foreign body that should be discarded, but as an integral part of the gum.

Implant insertion: STAGE TWO

The second stage is uncovering the implant and screwing in the healing screw. After the implant is stabilized and integrated with the bone, it is exposed. The implantologist cuts the mucosa directly above the implant and screws it into the implant, the so-called a healing screw, the purpose of which is to accelerate the healing process of the mucosa in the immediate vicinity of the implant, as well as to model the shape of the gums for the future prosthetic crown. After a 14-day regeneration period, prosthetic restoration can be performed.

Implant insertion: STAGE THREE

The third step is to take the impressions and fix the artificial tooth. During the first visit, the doctor takes prosthetic impressions and determines the color of the future crown with the patient. Then, in the laboratory, on the basis of the impression, two elements are made, thanks to which the doctor completes the last stage of placing dental implants:

  • abutment, i.e. a prosthetic pillar on which the crown is attached;
  • prosthetic crown, i.e. an artificial tooth.

At the last visit to the dentist's office, the doctor screws the connector to the implant. After making sure that the connection of the abutment with the implant is stable, the dentist fixes the prosthetic crown.

Recommendations after the procedure of placing dental implants

After the procedure, the doctor advises the patient on oral hygiene and sets up a schedule for periodic check-ups with the patient.

Placing dental implants - how much does it cost?

  • implant placement costs about PLN 3,500;
  • the price of a connector and a crown depends on the material they are made of. A steel link and a porcelain crown cost around PLN 600. On the other hand, all-ceramic crowns on a zirconium base with a connector made of the same material cost from PLN 2,000. zloty up

Fixing the denture on the implants

Implants can be used to fix not only single crowns, but also entire dentures. This type of procedure is recommended for people who have lost many or all of their teeth. During the procedure, two or three implants are placed in the jaw. After the process of fusing the implants with the bone, the doctor attaches a type of span to the artificial roots and then screws the prosthesis. The cost of attaching a prosthesis to implants may exceed PLN 10,000. PLN, because implanting implants in one jaw costs from 7 to 10 thousand. zloty. The cost of the prosthesis should also be added to this sum (its price depends on the quality of the material from which it was made).

Tooth implants prevent deformation of facial features. They also allow you to avoid wearing a prosthesis
