Cherries are fruits whose nutritional and healing properties have long been used in traditional folk medicine, incl. in the alleviation of bladder diseases. However, the cousins of cherries are valued primarily for their beneficial effects on the heart. Cherries are a great remedy for insomnia. Check what other properties cherries have.

Cherrieshave manynutritional properties , even though around 82 percent. they consist of water. The remaining 18 percent. is a treasury of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other valuable ingredients. However, cherries are valued not only for their he alth-promoting properties. Cherries enchant with their original taste, but only those that grow in Poland.

In our country, the temperature difference between night and day is so great that cherries acquire sweetness from the sun during the day, and acidity at night. That's why they have a delicious, sour-sweet taste, unlike Spanish or Italian cherries.

In turn, they owe their color to anthocyanins - dyes from the group of flavonoids (strong antioxidants) that give color to the fruit. The more of them, the darker the color of the fruit.

Cherries in cancer prevention

Cherries contain a large amount of antioxidants, as much as 400 mg / 100 g. These are substances that protect the body, among others. against cancer and the aging process, as they neutralize free radicals.

Therefore, cherries were placed on the ORAC list (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity), i.e. the list of products that protect the body to a high degree against the damaging effects of reactive oxygen species. 100 g of cherries (weight without peaks) has as many as 3500 ORAC points.

According to Dr. Ronald Priori of The US Department of Agriculture ResearchService "By increasing the consumption of fruits and vegetables, especially those with high ORAC values, you can significantly increase the level of antioxidants in the bloodstream by up to 15-20%."

Cherries support the work of the heart

Cherries support the work of the cardiovascular system thanks to the content of several substances:

  • anthocyanins increase the elasticity of the capillaries and strengthen and detoxify the heart. In addition, they have a positive effect on the production of red blood cells
  • potassium protects the heart. 100 g of cherries contain 173 mg of this element
  • vitamin C seals the blood vessels. 100 g of cherries contain 10 mg of ascorbic acid
  • fiber lowers the level of "bad" cholesterol, and thus reduces the risk of, inter alia, heart disease. 100 g of cherries contain 1.6 g of fiber
  • Tannins and organic acids are contained in cherry stalks. Modern phytotherapy recommends the use of a decoction of cherry stalks in order to prevent the formation of clots and blockages in the blood vessels;

Cherry juice for insomnia

Drinking cherry juice daily helps with insomnia and helps you fall asleep faster. This is what American scientists say, the results of which were published in the Journal of Medicinal Food .¹

A team of scientists from the USA conducted a study on a group of 15 elderly people who drank about 225 g of cherry juice every morning and evening for two weeks, and a different fruit juice for the next two weeks. After a month of research, it turned out that when drinking cherry juice, the subjects fell asleep 17 minutes earlier than when drinking a different juice.

Researchers argue that cherry juice owes this effect to melatonin. It is a hormone that regulates the rhythm of sleep. In turn, in cherries it acts as a natural antioxidant.

Scientists are therefore of the opinion that they are a he althier alternative to supplements that contain melatonin and are intended for people suffering from insomnia. Consuming cherries on a regular basis can help regulate thisthe body's natural cycle of activity and increase sleep efficiency.

It should be noted, however, that the study was conducted on a small group of people and lasted not long, because only 2 weeks, so it is not reliable and you should approach it with a distance.

It is worth knowing that in folk medicine, cherry juice has anti-inflammatory properties - it reduces fever, relieves muscle pain, and improves drug absorption.

Cherries - attention to carcinogenic mycotoxins and prussic acid

Cherries intended for consumption should not be spoiled or rotten. Such fruits contain carcinogenic molds - mycotoxins.

They can cause acute food poisoning, allergies or the development of mycosis, as well as diseases of the respiratory system. Therefore, even if only a piece of cherries is bruised, the whole fruit should be discarded, and not cut out the defective piece and eat the rest.

In turn, cherry stones contain hydrocyanic substances (so-called prussic acid), which are very harmful. Swallowing a cherry stone is not harmful to your he alth. She will simply be expelled. It is more dangerous to break or chew it, which can happen among children and pets.

Cherries for diseases of the urinary system

Cherries are diuretic due to their potassium and sodium content. Therefore, they are recommended as an aid in the treatment of urinary tract diseases: cystitis or kidney stones.

Cherries and diabetes

Cherries are less sweet fruits - in 100 g they contain up to 10 g of simple carbohydrates. Therefore, their glycemic index is low and amounts to 22. Therefore, they may become diabetic. It should be remembered that cherry juice (as well as from other fruits) is better to drink unsweetened, freshly squeezed, and preferably diluted with water.

Cherries and slimming

Cherries, thanks to their low calorific value (50 kcal in 100 g), are a desirable component of a slimming diet. Moreover, they are richa source of pectin - a soluble dietary fiber, which increases its volume under the influence of water and fills the stomach for a long time, giving a feeling of fullness.

ATTENTION! Cherries, due to the high content of fruit acids, stimulate the secretion of digestive enzymes and saliva, and thus - improve the appetite. For this reason, pediatricians recommend giving them to fussy eaters.

Don't do that
  • Do not buy cherries that have been in a stall all day, as light and heat destroy vitamins over the course of the day, especially C.
  • Do not eat cherries straight from the trees or right after you buy them. Before eating, rinse them thoroughly under running water to remove harmful chemicals such as pesticides and bacteria.
  • Do not wash down cherries with any liquids, especially water and milk. This combination can lead to gastrointestinal problems - most often diarrhea.
  • Do not eat cherries immediately before a meat meal as they will make it difficult to digest the protein contained in the meat.

Cherries - also valuable flowers, tree bark and petioles

Modern phytotherapy recommends the use of dried cherry blossoms as an aid in pneumonia (as a diaphoretic agent) and as an adjunct in the treatment of conjunctivitis. Just dip the cotton balls in a summer infusion of dried flowers and place them on your eyelids for 10 minutes.

In turn, a decoction of petioles is a natural slimming agent and prevents swelling. Folk medicine also uses the dried and powdered bark of the cherry tree, from which calming and sleeping teas are brewed.

On the other hand, a decoction of young cherry tree branches - drunk or added to the bath - helps soothe rheumatic pains.

Cherries - juices and glasses

There are two types of cherries in Poland - juice and glasses. The former are dark red, sometimes almost black, and have a dark colored juice.

The glasses are light red in color and have a clear, non-staining juice. The most popular cherry in Poland is the Vistula cherry, also known as Słupianka - juice cherry, which is distinguished by its unique taste.

It is grown in limestone or calcareous-clay areas in the Vistula parts of three voivodeships: Lubelskie, Mazowieckie and Świętokrzyskie. It has been registered as a regional product (listed in the EU Register of Protected Designations of Origin).
