What is dusting in April? In April, flowering trees (alder, poplar, willow, birch, ash, oak) are the main cause of inhalation allergies. Grasses as well as cladosporium and alternaria on a large scale do not start to dust until summer. Which pollen causes allergies in April?

What dusts in April?

Alder

The alder pollen peak falls in mid-March, but its pollen remains in the air even until mid-April. The movement of alder pollen is favored by the weather (no cloudiness and no precipitation). Symptoms of an alder pollen allergy can persist for weeks due to cross-allergies with the birch, which also blooms in April.

Symptoms of alder pollen allergy are rhinitis, conjunctivitis, contact eczema and superficial urticaria.

Poplar

Flowering begins at the end of March, but pollen can remain in the air until July. The highest concentration of the allergen occurs in mid-April.

They sensitize male poplar cultivars, which are pollinated from March to April, more strongly. The fluff, which rises from April to May, is a carrier of poplar seeds and does not cause allergies. The period of white fluff rising, however, coincides with the beginning of grass pollen, which is why the poplar is mistakenly considered to be the main cause of May runny nose and tearing. The poplar cross-reacts with the willow.

Willow

The highest concentration of willow pollen occurs in April, although the plant begins to bloom in March. It is an allergen that causes more problems for city dwellers than for rural residents. In rural areas, willows usually grow at some distance from the farms (on wet ground), which is why willow pollen relatively rarely reaches homes.

In cities, willow is a common park tree, and pollen shed by the wind stays between buildings for weeks, causingallergies. To minimize the risk of allergy, people sensitive to this allergen should not use Easter willows in their apartments.

Birch

There are 7 varieties of birch in Poland. They all start flowering in March, but the most intense pollen season is in April. After grass pollen, birch pollen is the most common cause of inflammation of the conjunctiva and nasal mucosa.

Birch dusty the most intensively in the afternoon, so people allergic to it can avoid colds by staying at home.

Ash

The ash starts to dust in parallel with the birch, but the pollen concentration varies with the year. It most often pollinates from late March to mid-May, and flowering reaches its peak in April. Despite the fact that ash produces the most aeroallergen (pollen) compared to other trees, it is not as burdensome here as in Western Europe.

It is worth knowing that ash belongs to the same family of trees as the olive, which is the most common cause of allergies in Mediterranean countries. People allergic to ash pollen, planning a holiday in southern countries, should take into account the pollen calendar of this tree (the olive pollen dust from April to June).

Symptoms of ash pollen allergy include rhinitis and acute conjunctivitis.

Oak

Oak pollen in the air begins to hover in the third decade of April and the first reactions to this allergen can be expected already then. The peak of oak pollination falls on May.

Two oak species grow wild in Poland:

- pedunculate oak - common oak, male flowers of which consist of 4-12 stamens, gathered in hanging cats. Pyli 2 weeks before the sessile oak;

- sessile oak - grows in forests and parks, grows throughout the country, with the exception of mountainous and north-eastern Poland.

During the period of high pollen, it is recommended to avoid places where trees that cause allergies are dusty. It's best to stay outdoors in the morning or after rain. When you come home, it's a good idea to take a quick shower and change clothes to get rid of pollen on the skin.
