What is polluting in February? This month is the apogee of alder pollen. The pollen calendar should also be followed by people allergic to hazel, because in February the concentration of its pollen in the air increases significantly.
The pollen of both plants causes symptoms similar to those that appear in the course of common colds this season, such as runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes or coughing. How to distinguish a cold from an allergy?
The latter lasts as long as we are exposed to a sensitizing allergen. So if, in spite of trying to alleviate cough and runny nose, these symptoms persist for a long time (longer than 2 weeks), an allergy may be suspected. It is worth knowing that people who live in urban agglomerations may have more severe symptoms, because the protein present in pollen reacts with car exhaust fumes.
What dusts in February?
Hazel
According to the pollen calendar in February, the concentration of hazel pollen in the air increases, most often the common hazel. In the first ten days of the month, this concentration is still low, but after February 10 it rises to the average level. Low concentration of pollen causes symptoms only in highly allergic people, and in moderate concentration in a significant part of people who are hypersensitive to pollen of this plant. Hazel ends pollination in the second half of March.
Alder
February is a hard time for people allergic to alder (alder) pollen. According to the data of the Environmental Allergen Research Center, their concentration in the air will be highest in the second half of the month almost throughout the country.
Particularly allergy sufferers from the southern part of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship, Lubuskie Voivodeship, part of the Dolnośląskie Voivodeship and the Opolskie Voivodeship should be on their guard. There, the highest concentration of alder pollen has been recorded since February 10.It is worth knowing that the alder dusts until mid-April.
According to the pollen calendar, alder pollen should appear in the air at the beginning of February. However, in some years - due to much higher temperatures than usual at this time of the year - the alder pollen season may begin as early as January. This was the case in 2007 and 2013, when in winter the thermometers showed over 12 degrees.
Good to know:If typical allergy symptoms appear during a winter walk in the park, this may indicate an allergy to hazel, alder or both, as alder allergen shows cross-reactions with hazel allergens.
People allergic to hazel have an increased risk of developing food allergies, especially to hazelnuts.
