What is dusting in May?In May, the first grasses begin to dust, which will be the main cause of allergic problems for the next few months. Rhinitis, conjunctival redness and tearing can also be caused by plantain, oak, pine, sorrel and nettle pollen.

Co pollen in May?

Grasses

Grasses and grains are the most common allergen associated with hay fever and atopic asthma. Their pollen concentration will be very high from May to the end of the first decade of July.

In Poland, there are 150 varieties out of 11 thousand. types of grasses known to biologists. Sweet Vernal, or Sweet Spring Grass, starts to dust first. Some say that the tincture based on this plant is an effective antidote for hay fever. Since June, the amount of the allergen of timothy grass and cocksfoot grass has been increasing.

For people who are allergic to grass pollen, the best time to spend time outside is in the morning and at night. The worst times are morning and the time between noon and evening, because the hot and dry air has the most pollen.

Grandmother

Goby pollinates from May to September, and the peak of pollen occurs at the turn of June and July. In May, the pollen concentration is still low, which is why plantain is relatively rarely the cause of allergies. Symptoms of allergies are rhinitis and conjunctivitis. Urticaria and atopic dermatitis appear in a small percentage of allergic individuals.

There are three species of plantain in Poland, two of which are pollen in May and June, and one in July. Pollen concentrations of this allergen do not reach high values, and only in places intensively covered by this plant (most often in wastelands), medium-high intensity of plantain pollen is observed.

Oak

Oak pollination begins at the end of April, but allergens remain in the air even until the end of May. Trees bloom just before or simultaneously with leaf development. During this time, allergic people canexperience considerable discomfort. Oak blooms briefly, and at the end it has little intensity, therefore it does not cause long-term allergies.

Pine

The pine is dusty from early May to mid-June. Female and male inflorescences are produced on the same trees, but only male flowers cause allergies.

Pine pollen is mistakenly thought to be a common cause of allergy this time of year, due to the intense yellow powder that settles on cars, balconies and in puddles.

It is worth knowing that allergies to pollen of conifers, including pine, are relatively rare, and allergies are caused mainly by other plants that bloom in May and June. However, days with a very high concentration of pollen in the air can turn out to be very troublesome.

People allergic to pine pollen should, above all, be careful with oil fruits (various species of nuts), which are cross allergic to pine allergen.

Sorrel

Sorrel starts pollinating in May, but allergens continue to hover throughout the summer, even until mid-September. The highest concentration of sorrel pollen is recorded in suburban areas. The plant causes allergies sporadically, and the symptoms of allergy are typical: hay fever, tearing and redness of the eyes may be troublesome.

Nettle

Nettle is one of the stronger spring allergens. People who are allergic to it experience the effects of allergies from May to October. Particular severity of nettle pollen symptoms occurs in the period from June to August, depending on the year. Folk medicine recommends drinking nettle tea on a regular basis, which will help reduce or relieve allergic symptoms.

Good to know:After heavy rainfall, the concentration of pollen in the air is relatively low and this level remains for 30-60 minutes. This is the best time for a walk for allergy sufferers. After an hour, allergens begin to build up again.
