Post-Lyme Syndrome is - according to IDSA specialists - a group of symptoms characteristic of Lyme disease, which persist despite the termination of treatment. In opposition to them are the doctors from ILADS, for whom the post-rhinitis syndrome is not a remnant of Lyme disease, but its continuation. Therefore, they propose different methods of treating the sick.

Post Lyme disease syndrome(PLS or post-Lyme disease syndrome - PLDS) is a group of symptoms characteristic of Lyme disease that persist after the end of treatment. This is what specialists from the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) believe.

In their opinion, Lyme disease should be treated with antibiotics for 3-4 weeks. After this period, the patient is considered cured and any symptoms that have not disappeared are treated as post-reliever syndrome.

Opposing them are doctors associated with the International Lyme and Associated Disease Society (ILADS).

What IDSA specialists call post-Lyme syndrome is for ILADS physicians a continuation of Lyme disease, not a remnant of it. Their observations and scientific research indicate the chronic nature of Lyme disease, and not the existence of the post-Lyme syndrome.

Post-reliever syndrome - causes

IDSA specialists describe PDS as a specific autoimmune response of a cured organism.

On the other hand, doctors from ILADS argue that it is a continuation of Lyme disease, as evidenced by the fact that in the tissues collected from patients with post-Lyme disease, the presence of spirochetes can often be found.

Post-reliever syndrome - symptoms

The symptoms of post-reliever syndrome are similar to those of chronic fatigue syndrome. There are, among others :

The existence of the post-reliever syndrome is only a theory with no undisputed scientific foundations

  • fatigue
  • sleep disturbance
  • aches and pains (headache, muscle and joint pain)
  • cognitive impairment (especially problems with memory and concentration)

Post-reliever syndrome - treatment

Doctors associated with IDSA, after the completion of 3-4 weeks of antibiotic therapy, consider the patient cured, because in their opinion the drugs managed to kill all bacteria.

If symptoms persist after treatment is completed, there is no need for antibiotics. The patient is then usually given anti-inflammatory drugs.

According to ILADS specialists, antibiotic therapy should last up to 2-4 months after the symptoms have completely disappeared (sometimes even several years in total). Then they consider the patient cured.
