Strabismus is a fairly common condition, but it can be eliminated with appropriate exercises, glasses or surgery.

Zezis an eye defect consisting in weakening of the eye muscles. The result is a change in the viewing angle of one eye relative to the other and distortion of stereoscopic vision. This defect significantly reduces the quality of life. People with this defect have problems with driving a car or operating various devices or machines in motion. Some sports, especially volleyball, are also a problem. The cause of strabismus may be changes in the development of the associative centers of the cerebral cortex.

Strabismus can cause the so-calledlazy eye . This is when the ability to see in one eye is impaired. Treatment is very simple. By covering the he althy eye, the lazy one forces himself to work.

Types of squint

There are two main types of strabismus. The most common form is accompanying strabismus. Its feature is that the squinting eye accompanies the guide eye's movements, while maintaining a constant angle of deviation. Taking the angle of the eye's deviation as a criterion of division, we can distinguish strabismus, convergent, upward, downward and oblique strabismus. The deviation of the axis of one eye may cause the loss of sensory balance in both eyes, which in turn leads to serious functional disorders. They occur mainly in the squinting eye, which, despite the anatomically correct perceptual apparatus, loses the ability to see. Amblyopia develops, which reduces visual acuity to a level close to practical blindness. In turn, hidden strabismus is a disturbance of the balance of the eye muscles. This imbalance is where one group of muscles is stronger than others. It manifests itself when binocular vision is turned off, and thus there is no need to combine the images. Depending on the direction, we can distinguish: inward, outward, upward and downward deviation.

How to treat strabismus?

In the case of strabismus, it is important to start treatment as early as possible. In children, 15 percent. patients are eligible for surgery. It is recommended that the operation take place no later than 10 years of age. Then there is a great chance not only to correctly position the eyeballs, but also to learn proper binocular vision. In adults, only strabismus is operated oncosmetics, which is why age does not matter here. However, it is impossible to restore correct binocular vision.

Surgical treatment always takes place under full anesthesia. Before referral for surgery, the doctor must assess the vision defect, check binocular vision, and in adults additionally so-called duplication attempts. Then the anaesthesiologist conducts a detailed anesthetic interview with the patient.

It is worth remembering a few important tips. 6 hours before the procedure, you must not eat or drink anything - to avoid choking. If you are taking any medications, you should take them at the usual time. It is forbidden to drink alcohol 24 hours before the procedure. Nail polish and make-up are not allowed, and 6 hours before the procedure - do not smoke. On the other hand, after the procedure, alcohol cannot be consumed for 24 hours. The day after the surgery, the doctor removes the dressing, and after a week the doctor will check it.
