Hello! I am 38 years old, six months ago my dad died of colorectal cancer, his father died of cirrhosis of the liver. From my mother's side, my grandmother died of liver cancer, and my mother's sister died of colon cancer. Maybe it's an obsession, but I think there's something wrong with me too. I've done some basic blood and urine tests and they're super good! The more I get nervous. What should I do to be sure? My GP says I'm oversensitive. I am asking for advice, Agnieszka
As colorectal cancer occurred in a first-degree relative (father), the risk of developing colorectal cancer should be considered higher than average. A careful analysis of cancer incidence in your family, also among distant relatives, is very important. The age of onset, the result of the histopathological examination, and the exact location of the neoplasm are important (e.g. whether the colorectal cancer concerned the rectum, sigmoid colon, colon, or whether the cancer of the reproductive organ was cancer of the cervix, endometrium or ovary). If possible, the results of the colonoscopy should also be provided for the visit, and if polyps are detected, also their histopathological examination. In order to determine the appropriate recommendations for prophylactic tests and possible indications for genetic tests, it is necessary to visit the Genetic Outpatient Clinic with a specialist clinical geneticist who has experience in the field of oncogenetics. I invite you.
