The urine of a he althy person should be transparent - its turbidity results from the presence of what should not be present in the urine: leukocytes, mucus, bacteria or epithelium, or crystals of mineral compounds that aggregate into smaller or larger strands or flocs.

It is worth knowing, however, that the cause of cloudy urine is not always a serious disease: sometimes the causes are trivial and it is enough to change the lifestyle or home methods to bring the situation back to normal. Nevertheless, this symptom should not be underestimated, especially if the urine is cloudy during several consecutive visits to the toilet or the condition occurs regularly.

Other symptoms accompanying cloudy urine, such as pain in the kidney area, burning sensation when urinating or fever are an alarm signal.

What causes cloudy urine?

Urine becomes cloudy for various reasons: both minor and serious infections.

The most common causes of cloudy urine are:

  • urinary tract infection - e.g. cystitis, pyelonephritis
  • urethritis
  • urolithiasis
  • urolithiasis

Cloudy urine: which doctor should you see?

The visit should not be delayed if other disturbing symptoms appear, such as hematuria, the feeling of incomplete emptying of the bladder, pain or difficulty in urinating (the so-called dysuria), pain in the abdomen or kidneys, fever .

Cloudy urine: research and treatment

Diagnosing the cause of cloudy urine requires tests - in this case, the doctor will order a general urine test and urine culture with an antibiogram. In some cases, additional examinations are also necessary, such as ultrasound of the abdominal cavity and small pelvis.

Only on the basis of the test results, diagnosis is made and specific treatment is implemented. If the cause of cloudy urine is a urinary tract infection, treatment will include antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and painkillers.

If these symptoms are caused by kidney stones, it is necessary to heal the inflammation that occurs when the stone that passes through the urinary tract damages the walls of the ureter, and leukocytes enter the urine.
