Millions of people around the world spend several or even several hours a day at the computer. They often have sight problems. The eyes are watering, burning, itching and even aching, there are problems with seeing clearly. Are you sure the computer is the culprit?

Statistics show that as many as 95 out of 100 people working at a computer have ophthalmic ailments. Experts wonder to what extent this is the result of the impact of the device itself, which iscomputer , and to what extent the disregard of the rules of its use and organization of work. What rules should be followed if you want to keep good eyesighteyesight ?

How does the computer work on the eyes?

The computer emits a relatively large amount of heat, which not only increases the air temperature but also reduces the humidity. If we work many hours at the computer in an air-conditioned room, this leads to the so-called dry eye syndrome, which is manifested by itching, burning, redness and paineyes . This is helped by air humidification and the use of drops, the so-called artificial tears Another threat to our eyes is the electrostatic field emitted by the computer. Like the screen, the face attracts charged dust particles, pollen, bacteria, chemical particles, etc. This can cause allergic irritation or even eye inflammation. It is manifested by swelling of the conjunctiva and eyelids, and the collection of secretions. It is accompanied by photophobia, burning sensation and tearing. The electrostatic field is strongest during the first 15 minutes of the monitor's operation. Therefore, it is worth turning on the computer several minutes before starting work.

Important

Pregnant women should not work at the computer for more than 4 hours a day (Journal of Laws of 1996, No. 114, item 545).

Frequent eye problems

  • itching, tearing, burning, also pain in the eyes,
  • deteriorating visual acuity even after several hours of work,
  • headaches,
  • blurred vision when looking into the distance,
  • blurry close-up vision (e.g. of an image on a monitor screen, in a newspaper),
  • seeing the image on the screen double,
  • squinting your eyes to see better,
  • skipping or confusing lines when reading,
  • mixing columns in tables, changing words or numbers.

Take care of your eyes - give yourself maximum field of view off the screen

Set up your computer so that you can look beyond the screen, preferably out of the window. If there is no window, don't sit in a corner or face the wall. It is best to sit facing the door so that you can see into the corridor or other rooms after opening it.

Eliminate glare

If you can see any images or reflections on your monitor when your monitor is off, it is not positioned correctly. Glare forces you to turn your head, tilt your body. You tighten the muscles of your neck, back and hands. It is difficult for the eyes to clearly read the information on the screen. It makes them tired. You can change the angle of the screen, cover windows, turn off bright lighting, etc. However, it is best to place an anti-glare screen on the monitor, which increases the contrast between the characters and the background. Modern computers already have anti-glare screens factory installed.

Take care of proper lighting

The best overhead lights are lamps that can be adjusted so they don't cast light directly on the computer - standing, facing the ceiling. It is worth equipping them with a dimmer or a switch with three levels of light intensity to be able to adjust its intensity to your own needs. If the top and side light is not appropriate for computer work, put a lamp on the desk, preferably an office lamp with an adjustable arm and a hundred-watt light bulb. This will also help illuminate the text you are working on. Place the sheet of text vertically, parallel to the screen, in a special holder. Moving your eyes from the right to the left of the page is better for your eyesight than constantly moving it down to the text and up to the screen.

Learn to look

Many people have the bad habit of concentrating their eyesight on the monitor and blinking too rarely, which leads to physical and mental strain and rapid eye strain. Therefore, you need to learn the technique of looking at the computer. The lack of short breaks to look into the distance is one of the main factors leading to myopia in computer workers. How to look into the distance?

  • Raise your gaze slightly above or next to the screen and focus on the farthest object.
  • Look at the next two items.
  • Blink a few times.
  • After a short while, look back at the screen.
You must do it

Blinking moisturizes and cleanses the eyes, relaxes the muscles of the face and forehead, prevents frowning. Blinking too infrequently causes redness, burning in the eyes.

  • Close your eyes gently - upper and lower eyelidslet them touch each other lightly. Don't tighten them.
  • Keep your forehead, eyebrows, and the rest of your face still - just move your eyelids.
  • Open your eyes every 3-5 seconds.
  • Repeat 15 times. Flapping your eyelids helps to relax the muscles surrounding your eyes, which tend to be too tense after prolonged work.
  • Place your fingertips gently against your temples. Blink 10 times lightly and as fast as you can. You should not feel any movement under your fingers. If you can feel it, you are blinking too hard.
  • Close your eyes lightly (do not squeeze your eyelids) and rest. Take three deep breaths. Relax your eyebrows.
  • Repeat this twice.
