Hemorrhagic stroke (intracerebral hemorrhage) is colloquially a haemorrhage to the brain, caused by a rupture of a cerebral vessel. Haemorrhagic stroke occurs less frequently than ischemic stroke, but is much more serious. What are the symptoms and causes of a hemorrhagic stroke? What is the treatment? What's the prognosis?

Hemorrhagic stroke (intracerebral haemorrhage)is the result of a rupture of a vessel that supplies the brain with blood, causing a suddenbleeding into the brainor space located between the brain and the skull. In the latter case, it is a subarachnoid haemorrhage, which has symptoms other than an intracerebral hemorrhagic stroke.

Cerebral hemorrhagic stroke accounts for 10-15 percent all strokes. Their incidence is estimated at 10-20 cases per 100,000.

Although all haemorrhagic strokes are dangerous, the most dangerous is cerebellar haemorrhage (into the posterior cranial cavity), because as the volume of the posterior cavity hematoma gradually increases, pressure on the respiratory center of the brainstem occurs, which is a direct threat for life and requires neurosurgical intervention as soon as possible. Severe course and worse prognosis are those in which the hematoma breaks through to the ventricular system of the brain, filled with cerebrospinal fluid.

Hemorrhagic stroke: causes

A vessel that breaks becomes damaged earlier as a result of untreated or ineffective treatment of high blood pressure or diabetes. Rare causes of hemorrhage are blood coagulation disorders.

In addition, certain medications or improperly used medications (e.g. anticoagulants - vitamin K antagonists, heparin, drugs that inhibit platelet aggregation) can cause a stroke. Hemorrhagic stroke can also be caused by complications of thrombolytic therapy, drugs, infective endocarditis, cancerous tumors and their metastases.

Hemorrhagic stroke: symptoms

The primary symptom is limb weakness, usually one-sided. The strength of the arm and leg on the left or right side is weakened, there is a dropped corner of the mouth, as well as speech disorders in which the patient has slurred speech, he may not be able to express himself.

Other symptoms that indicate a stroke are sudden dizziness accompanied by imbalance, sudden falls, sometimes double vision, confusion, and altered consciousness.

Not all symptoms may occur simultaneously, as they depend on which part of the brain has been damaged and to what extent.

Remember the symptoms of a stroke
  • weakening of the limb strength
  • face numbness with a twisted mouth
  • speech disorder
  • visual disturbance
  • disturbance of consciousness
  • vertigo with imbalance

Hemorrhagic stroke: treatment

- The priority in the treatment of stroke is time - says Dr. hab. For Poradnikzdrowie.pl. n. med. Adam Kobayashi from the Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology in Warsaw. - For treatment to be effective, treatment must be administered as soon as possible after the onset of a stroke - emphasizes the expert.

Therefore, if a patient has had a stroke, they should be taken to the hospital immediately, preferably by calling an ambulance. Patients with a stroke should receive treatment in a stroke unit whenever possible.

Treatment of cerebral hemorrhages depends on the diagnosis, location of the bleeding site, and the patient's age. The diagnosis usually takes into account the results of tomographic examination, MRI, angiography of the cerebral vessels, and determination of coagulation parameters. In all cases, first of all, blood pressure should be measured. Careful observation of the patient and constant monitoring of his neurological condition, as well as control of the water-electrolyte and acid-base balance are extremely important for starting the therapy.

Stroke - treatment must be quick
