Neutral goiter of the thyroid gland often does not give any symptoms. The main cause of its appearance is iodine deficiency in the diet. Check what the symptoms of indifferent goiter may be and find out how it is treated!

Neutral goiter of the thyroid glandis an enlargement of the thyroid gland without disturbances in the hormonal functioning of the thyroid gland. Neutral goiter of the thyroid gland affects women four times more often.

Neutral goiter of the thyroid gland: symptoms

Neutral goiter of the thyroid gland is often asymptomatic or cosmetic. However, when there is a large growth of a goiter (especially a lumpy goiter), the patient may experience symptoms caused by pressure, such as:

  • shortness of breath due to constriction of the windpipe
  • swallowing disorder (dysphagia), caused by esophageal stricture
  • hoarseness, caused by paralysis of the recurrent laryngeal nerve and paresis of the vocal cord

Neutral goiter of the thyroid gland: causes

Neutral thyroid goiter is most often caused by iodine deficiency in the diet. The following can also contribute to the development of the indifferent goiter:

  • genetic predisposition
  • goitrogen compounds contained in some edible plants (cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, radish, peanuts) and industrial pollutants (phenols, aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, lead compounds, sulfur, mercury, excess fluoride)
  • resistance to thyroid hormones
  • excess iodine

Parenchymal neutral goiter: treatment

Treatment of neutral parenchymal goiter depends on whether the iodine supply is sufficient or whether we are dealing with its deficiency.

In the case of iodine deficiency, the treatment consists in either the use of iodine preparations alone in the dose indicated by the doctor or the combined administration of iodine and L-thyroxine preparations under the supervision of a doctor.

If the iodine intake is sufficient, only L-thyroxine is administered.

The doctor always decides about the amount of iodine and L-thyroxine doses and the length of treatment.

Neutral lumpy goiter: treatment

Since the nodular nodular goiter may not cause any symptoms, doctors usually limit themselves only to its observations and annual checks. If there are compression or cosmetic symptoms, the following can be used:

  • oral L-thyroxine preparations
  • radiojod
  • thyroid surgery
  • ethanol injection into the thyroid tumor.

Diseases of the thyroid gland

The thyroid gland is a hormone-secreting gland that regulates hormone levels to maintain a physiological balance. Disorders of hormone production (sudden decrease or significant increase) can cause various diseases of the thyroid gland, including overactive and underactive.
