Hyperthyroidism manifests itself, inter alia, with an accelerated metabolism. In treating an overactive thyroid gland, it is important to have a diet that protects against significant weight loss.
Due to accelerated metabolism, some patients withhyperthyroidismlose up to 30 kg within a few months. Therefore, a properdietis very important. The body needs to be supplied with much more energy to meet all its needs.
Principles of an overactive thyroid diet
- In hyperthyroidism, the need for minerals and vitamins increases, especially A, C, B1. Despite the richness of vitamins, the amount of raw vegetables and fruit in the diet should not be too high. They contain a lot of fiber, which limits the absorption of energy ingredients from the diet. The best sources of vitamin C are parsley, red pepper, broccoli, spinach, lemons and oranges, kiwi, and strawberries. Vitamin A contributes to the proper functioning of the thyroid gland. It can be found in carrots, peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, apricots, and peaches. The source of vitamin B1 should be cereal products, milk and its products, eggs, fish. Milk and dairy products also provide calcium, for which the demand is also increasing.
- Increase the amount of protein in your diet. Most (about 2/3) should be of animal origin. Eat more milk, kefir, yoghurt, cottage cheese, eggs, lean meats (beef, veal, poultry, rabbit) and cold cuts (poultry and sirloin) than before. Remember that lean fish - cod, zander, pike are good sources of protein.
- Be sure to limit the amount of fat. Avoid lard, bacon, giblets, and canned food. Fat in your diet should come from plants.
- The way of preparing meals is important. In order not to provoke diarrhea, a slightly digestible diet is safer, i.e. without fatty and fried foods. Meat, fish and vegetables are best steamed, stewed without browning or baked in foil.
- Discard foods that provide empty calories, such as sweets, cakes, crisps, s alty sticks, etc. For dessert, you can eat puddings, fruit jellies, purees, mousses and fruit salads.
- If you are constantly hot, so as not to increase your discomfort, better give up hot drinks and dishes, especially soups.
- Limit your drinkingcoffee and tea, even cold, because caffeine increases the number of heart contractions and stimulates the nervous system.
