E-prescription is the electronic equivalent of a paper prescription. From January 8, 2022, doctors are required to issue only electronic prescriptions. In order to collect medicines from the pharmacy, it is enough to enter the four-digit code received by SMS or e-mail or submit an information printout. Paper prescriptions will be issued only in specific cases. Haven't used an e-prescription yet? Check how to do it.

E-prescriptionis information about the drug prescribed for the patient, which is saved on the Patient's Internet Account. The electronic record is transferred via the system from the doctor to the pharmacist, and from there to the institution that reimburses the drug, i.e. the National He alth Fund (NFZ). The electronic patient record will contain information about the doctor who dispensed the drug, the dosage of the drug and its price.

From January 8, 2022 doctors will only issue electronic prescriptions. Paper prescriptions will be written out only in a few, very specific situations.

E-prescription (electronic prescription) - implementation

How can I get an e-prescription from a doctor? In two ways:

  1. The doctor issues an e-prescription for you in the system , and then: a / you receive a 4-digit code by SMS, which you present in the pharmacy along with your PESEL number, or … B / you receive the e-prescription by e-mail as a PDF file - it has the barcode that you show at the pharmacy.Note! To use the above two options, you must first activate the Patient Internet Account (IKP) at: www.pacjent.gov.pl. To receive an e-prescription by SMS or e-mail, in the "My Account" tab, you enter your phone number and / or e-mail address. To set up an IKP, however, you must first have the so-called Trusted Profile. You can find out how to do it at www.pz.gov.pl.
  2. The doctor issues the so-called information printout . The doctor is obliged to provide an information printout at each patient's request. There is neither the doctor's stamp nor his signature on the printout, yet the pharmacist is obliged to dispense the medications listed on theprintout. For this purpose, it reads the data from the printout electronically.

E-prescription (electronic prescription) - advantages

  1. Readability- until now, it has often happened that the pharmacist referred the patient because the prescription was incompletely written by the doctor or he had problems with the reading of the medical letter. Thanks to e-prescriptions, such situations will not happen anymore.
  2. Availability- even if the patient loses the printout from the doctor, don't worry as the e-prescription is in the system. It will also be possible to buy the drug in another pharmacy without the need to obtain a prescription.
  3. Safety- e-prescription minimizes the possibility of dispensing an incorrect drug, and information on drug dosing is always available on the Patient Online Account.
  4. Convenience- first: the e-prescription can also be issued after consulting a doctor, e.g. by phone, or during an e-visit - without the need to show the patient to the office; and second, the patient does not have to go to the pharmacy in person to pick up the medications. This was the fear of retirees and pensioners for whose drugs a loved one receives. E-prescription drugs can be picked up by anyone, as long as they have the PESEL number of the patient to whom the drugs were prescribed.

E-prescription (electronic prescription) - disadvantages

What are the real threats that from January 8, 2022. the e-prescription system will not work properly?

  1. inability to operate the system by physicians - especially older ones (among 175,000 professionally active physicians, 42,000 physicians already have retirement rights), at the end of 2022 there were voices that many doctors - retired people have not learned to issue e-prescriptions and do not want to implement this system,
  2. failure to prepare the clinic - at the end of 2022. to the so-called the P1 platform, which is used to issue prescriptions, was connected to only 55 percent. he alth care facilities.
When can a doctor issue a traditional paper prescription?
  • within the so-called target import - it consists in importing medicinal products and foodstuffs for particular nutritional uses from abroad that do not have a marketing authorization in Poland, and are necessary to save the patient's life or he alth,
  • for people with unknown identity,
  • cross-border prescriptions (until the end of 2022),
  • prescription pro auctore (for the doctor who issues the prescription) and pro familiae (for people close to the doctor issuing the prescription, i.e. for his spouse, ascendant, descendant or siblings) - decision to choose a prescription - paper or electronic- will belong to the issuer,
  • lack of access to the e-he alth system, which may be related to, inter alia, with system or office system failure or lack of internet access.

A paper prescription can also be issued by a vet!

E-prescription: what else is worth knowing about it?
  • is indestructible - it cannot be lost, kidnapped or stained, and its original is stored in the system for 5 years,
  • if it contains any mistakes - they can be corrected by the pharmacist or, at his request, by the doctor who issued the prescription,
  • you can write a maximum of 5 medications on a paper prescription - so far also on the e-prescription,
  • the doctor can issue any number of e-prescriptions to the patient,
  • for chronically ill patients, the doctor can issue an e-prescription for up to a year - drugs with the same implementation date: antibiotics (within 8 days), psychotropic drugs (30 days) and immunological preparations (4 months),
  • e-prescription allows you to purchase all cheaper substitutes for the originally prescribed drug.
