Polish doctors invented electrodes that inhibit hunger - they send a signal to the brain about satiety. So far, this method of weight loss has been used by a woman weighing 120 kg and a man weighing 130 kg. The initial effects in the treatment of obesity are already visible. Patients are slowly but surely losing weight.
The innovative method of treatmentobesitywas used by doctors from the 3rd Department and Clinic of General Surgery, Collegium Medicum of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. In January 2007. team led by prof. Roman Herman implanted smallelectrodesunder the skin on the back of the head of two patients. This is the first such procedure in the world. Krakow doctors are planning tests with the participation of five more patients in the near future. For now, they will receive electrodes for a month and a half. If the effect meets expectations, smart devices will be permanently implanted.
- Thanks to the electrodes, even when the stomach is empty, information about satiety is sent to the brain, thanks to which the patient does not feel hungry - says the creator of the method, Dr. Jacek Sobocki. - Now they only need three meals a day. They don't feel an irrepressible urge to eat.
Doctors hope that the new technique will become a breakthrough in the treatment ofobesityIII degree, i.e. enormous ( BMI - body mass index- 40+) and extremely enormous (BMI 60+). Until now, the most commonly used procedures for this purpose are bariatric surgeries, i.e. surgical treatment of obesity. People whose body mass index (BMI) exceeds 35 and who suffer from other diseases that are complications of obesity, or whose BMI is greater than 40 are eligible for them. You can calculate your body mass index using the BMI calculator. In Poland, the problem of obesity affects 1 million 200 thousand. people.
Experts agree that surgicalobesity treatmentis a must. - With the BMI index exceeding 40, conservative treatment, i.e. diet and exercise, basically gives no results - says Dr. Janusz Strzelczyk from the General and Transplant Surgery Clinic of the Medical University of Lodz. - Yes, you can lose weight, but only 2 percent. those who lose weight manage to maintain their weight for the next 5 years.
