Low-salicylate (aspirin) diet is the only effective method of fighting allergy to salicylic acid. It allows people allergic to salicylates to avoid serious allergic reactions, such as attacks of dyspnea or anaphylactic shock. Check out what the aspirin diet is and what you can eat if you are allergic to salicylates.

Low-salicylate (aspirin) dietis a specific elimination diet. It consists in eliminating or reducing the supply of products that contain salicylates through the appropriate selection of foods in the allergic diet. Salicylates cause serious disease symptoms in people allergic to it. In such cases, the aspirin diet is the only effective method of fightingsalicylic acid allergy .

Principles of the aspirin diet

If it is suspected that salicylates contained in foods are the cause of allergies, a 7-14-day treatment is recommended, during which products containing salicylic acid should be replaced with products free from this substance. It is forbidden to use aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs during the diet. After completing the diet, every 2-3 days you should gradually introduce new food products (with a low or medium content of salicylic acid) to the diet. If symptoms of an allergic reaction occur, the suspected allergic product should be excluded from the diet.

It should be remembered that the goal of the aspirin diet is to assess the tolerance of acetylsalicylic acid in people who develop symptoms of an allergic reaction (mainly urticaria) and to maintain the supply of salicylates in consumed foods at a level at which no side effects occur. This level is individual and variable, i.e. salicylate tolerance is not a fixed value and will vary with circumstances (e.g. stress). Therefore, in some cases it is not necessary to completely eliminate foods that contain salicylic acid.

Who is the aspirin diet for?

The aspirin dietis recommended primarily for people withallergy to salicylates , oraspirin asthma(extreme manifestation of this allergy). You canIt can also be used as an adjuvant in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). According to scientists, an aspirin diet can contribute to the improvement of he alth also of people suffering from chronic urticaria or bronchial asthma.

Aspirin diet - what can you eat?

During treatmentfoods low in salicylic acidmay be well tolerated by the allergic person and need not be excluded from the diet as long as they are consumed in small amounts. This rule applies to, among other things, ripe fruit, whose salicylate content decreases with the ripening process, and cooked vegetables (cooking lowers the salicylate content).

It is not recommended to use, for example, spices, canned food, foods preserved with benzoates and articles containing synthetic flavors, fragrances, etc., because they are characterized by a high content of salicylates.
