Should I get vaccinated against jaundice? We ask this question before each procedure, operation and trip abroad. Vaccinations for jaundice are the only prophylactic prevention of hepatitis A or hepatitis B. As part of the Yellow Week, we can vaccinate in one of the participating points.

This year, the fall edition of the Yellow Week promotingjaundice vaccinationswill start on October 8 and last until October 19. This is the 25th edition of the nationwide campaign, the idea of which is to educate about the dangers of hepatitis A (hepatitis A) and hepatitis B (hepatitis B) and to popularizepreventive vaccinationsas a proven prophylaxis these diseases.

Hepatitis A and B are one of the most common infectious diseases in the world, which still pose a serious and real threat to human he alth and life. An important role is played by the knowledge about the disease, the awareness of how to avoid it and the conviction about the benefits of vaccination, which will protect and immunize the body for a long time.

Who is at risk of viral hepatitis?

Hepatitis A , commonly referred to by patients asfood jaundice , is a disease that occurs practically all over the world. Infection can occur through direct contact with a sick person or through the consumption of food or water contaminated with the virus. At present, people traveling to Turkey, Tunisia and Egypt are mainly at risk of hepatitis A. There is no doubt that anyone who is taking a vacation plan in such countries should be protected against hepatitis A by vaccination- informs prof. Andrzej Radzikowski from the Department of Gastroenterology and Children's Nutrition at the Medical University of Warsaw. Even accommodation in an exclusive hotel and following basic hygiene rules does not provide a 100% guarantee of protection against disease, because infection can occur by brushing your teeth with infected water or consuming it in the form of ice in a drink. The most effective form of hepatitis A prophylaxis are protective vaccinations.Hepatitis Bis one of the most dangerous diseases, extremely contagious- emphasizes prof. Andrzej Radzikowski -HIV is 100 times less contagiousfrom hepatitis B virus. Any person who has a planned procedure that violates the continuity of the skin should be protected against hepatitis B.To be infected with hepatitis B, only a drop of blood is enough, so it can be dangerous to our he alth treatments performed in hairdressing, beauty or tattoo parlors.

Prevention - the main weapon in the fight against jaundice

Vaccination points participating in the Yellow Week action offer a combined vaccine immunizing against both types of virus (the standard vaccination schedule consists of 3 doses - the first dose is given at any chosen date, the second dose after 1 month, and the third dose 6 months after the first dose) and monovalent vaccines, i.e. vaccines that protect against one type of virus. In the case of hepatitis A, the vaccine is given in 2 doses, 6-12 months apart. The basic vaccination schedule against hepatitis B consists of 3 doses, the second one month after the first vaccination and the third one six months after the first dose. It should be remembered that only by adopting the full course of vaccination will you provide long-term protection against hepatitis A and B8 infection.
