Amarylis - what does it look like?
Amaryllis is a beautiful ornamental plant. It is characterized by large, funnel-shaped flowers with an intense fragrance.
The size of an amaryllis onion ranges from 5 to 10 cm in diameter.
It grows 1-2 purple stalks with flower buds on top. The stems are 30-60 cm tall.
In addition to the stem topped with flowers, leaves also grow from the bulb. They are oblong and lingual. They often appear only after the plant has bloomed.
Amaryllis flowers can come in many colors. The most common are white, pink and purple. They grow in clusters of 2 to 12 pieces.
Amaryllis - is it poisonous?
This beautiful flower is unfortunately poisonous to humans and animals. The onions are the poisonous part. After their consumption, it comes to:
- shortness of breath
- irritation of the mucous membranes
- vomiting
- diarrhea
Convulsions and convulsions may also occur.
If poisoning is found, the poisoned person should be given large amounts of fluids and medicinal charcoal.
The next step is to see a doctor immediately.
In the case of amaryllis, flowers often grow from the onion before the first leaves appear.
Amarylis (Amarylis belladonna) and spike (Hippeastrum)
Amaryllis and moss are very often confused with each other or considered to be one plant. However, these are two completely different bulb plants. They even differ in origin.
The Amaryllis comes from South Africa and the lattice from South America.
The size is also differentof their flowers - amaryllis flowers are slightly smaller, but they are more numerous. Hipeastrum flowers are much larger. Their diameter can be up to 30 cm. They grow in smaller numbers (up to 4 per stem). Unlike amaryllis flowers - they do not smell.
The onions are also bigger in the compactors. They are also rounder and most often covered with brown scales.
The stem of the amaryllis is full - while the stalks - empty inside.
Occult flowers usually come in shades of orange, pink, white and red.
Amarylis - care
Amaryllis can be grown both in the garden and at home. In Poland, however, it is recommended to grow this plant in pots due to quite difficult climatic conditions. Amaryllis is an onion plant.
Due to its flowering period, it is very often bought during the Christmas season. You can also grow it yourself.
When starting the cultivation, remember to place the onion in the pot in such a way that 1/3 of the bulb is above the ground.
In the case of growing amaryllis in the garden, the onion should be dug into the ground to a depth of about 8 cm.
The flower should appear after about eight weeks. The flowering period for amaryllis is the turn of December and January.
Amaryllis needs quite a lot of sun, so it is best to put a pot with a bulb on the window sill. After the flower has emerged, the amaryllis can be moved to a slightly less sunny location to extend the flowering time.
After the plant has flowered, the onion should be put into a state of rest. Take it out of the ground, clean it, and put it in a dry place. After a few weeks, the onions can be planted again.
The amaryllis bulb should be watered moderately. It is impossible to leave water in the stand, as the plant may rot.
Amaryllis should be fertilized on average every 3 months until buds appear.
Amarylis - price
The price of amaryllis bulbs is about PLN 20 each. Large onions cost between PLN 40-60.
