Skrzydłokwiat is a living air filter and that is why it should be present in every Polish home. However, it has one major disadvantage: it can be toxic to children and pets, so it absolutely must be out of their reach.

Spathiphyllum( Spathiphyllum ) is sometimes called the house lily: it owes this term to its beautiful, snow-white flowers. It has low requirements, it is long-lived and very decorative - these advantages favor it even novice gardeners.

This genus includes about a hundred species, two of them are most often cultivated in houses: floral or bouquet ( Spathiphyllum floribundum ) and Wallis' perennial ( Spathiphyllum wallisi ).

Peace Lily: valuable properties

The natural habitat of the pearflowers are tropical areas of Central and South America and Asia - there the plant forms decorative clusters with white inflorescences.

In Poland, it blooms at home from the beginning of summer to the end of October, although it happens that white flowers appear even in winter - the condition is, however, to provide the plant with a suitable substrate with high humidity.

At home, especially during the heating season, it is worth having a wingflower, but not only because it looks nice and is resistant to pests. This plant has very valuable properties for humans.

Research carried out by NASA has proven that the leaves and flowers of the perennial flower absorb chemical compounds harmful to humans and animals, including those that may be found in smog - primarily benzene, formaldehyde, xylene, carbon monoxide and trichlorethhene.

As it partially releases moisture to the environment, it can also slightly humidify the air in the room - however, we will feel this effect only when several plants are present in the room at the same time.

Is wingflower poisonous?

The winged flower is such a plant by Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde: on the one hand, its properties are valuable for humans and animals, but on the other hand, they can seriously harm them.

The leaves and flowers of this plant contain alkaloids and calcium oxalates: when bitten (by a child or pet), they can irritate the skin around the mouth and the delicate mucosa of the mouth, throat and esophagus.

One ofsymptoms are then severe burning and redness of these areas. Swallowed, they lead to vomiting and even to heart rhythm disturbances. Therefore, this plant should always be out of reach of children and pets.

What to do if you suspect wingworm poisoning?

As with other poisonous houseplants, chewing or swallowing a part of a Pansy flower requires medical attention, especially if you don't know exactly how much of the plant was ingested.

If you see leftover leaves or flowers in your child's mouth, remove them and rinse the child's mouth with plenty of lukewarm water, then go to the pediatrician or emergency room.

The same is done with the pet: before we go with him to the vet, try to open his mouth, remove the rest of the leaves and rinse with lukewarm water.
