The contraceptive injection(in Poland the only one available is Depo-Provera) causes infertility similar to that which occurs in pregnant women or in the early stage of breastfeeding.
Hormonal contraceptionin the form of an injection is used once every 3 months. The contraceptive injection contains only one hormone, progestin, which inhibits ovulation and thickens the mucus on the cervix to prevent fertilization. The Pearl Index for this method is 0.2-0.5.
Who is the contraceptive injection for?
The injection is recommended for breastfeeding women as it does not contain lactation-inhibiting estrogen. It can be used by women who, for various reasons, cannot take traditional contraceptive pills - e.g. due to liver diseases.
Contraindications to the use of the contraceptive injection include: cardiovascular diseases, arterial hypertension, thromboembolic diseases.
How to take the contraceptive injection
Once every three months, during the first 5 days of the cycle, a nurse or doctor gives an injection into a muscle. When a woman has given birth and is not breastfeeding, the injection is given 5 days after giving birth, and if she is breastfeeding - at the 6th week after giving birth. Some women administer the drug themselves, but an unskillful injection is painful.
