Lotus birth is most often performed at home, under the care of midwives or doula, because it is still a little used practice in hospitals. Mainly because many doctors are skeptical about this form of childbirth. What is lotus birth and is it safe for a baby? Why are specialists skeptical about lotus birth?

Lotus birthis almost the same asclassical childbirth . The difference is that the umbilical cord is not cut during its duration. After birth, it remains attached to the placenta until it comes off spontaneously. Proponents of lotus birth point out that since the umbilical cord does not come off by itself at the time of birth, nature evidently wanted it so and should not be interfered with. Spontaneousde-scheduleoccurs from 3 to even 10 days after giving birth.

The first lotus birth took place in the USA in 1974. The woman in labor was a clairvoyant who claimed to see the pain experienced by the newborn when the umbilical cord was cut. Observing the behavior of the chimpanzees, she noticed that they left the placenta intact until it fell off by itself. She then decided to apply this practice during her labor.

What is a lotus birth?

Lotus childbirthis the same as classical childbirth, but after the placenta is born, it is not treated as medical waste and thrown into the bin, but washed with blood (which accelerates decomposition), wrapped in gauze or a cloth diaper and placed in a bowl with s alt.

Lotus childbirth according to the philosophy of the lotus

The term for childbirth comes from the lotus flower which symbolizes the beginning of life. According to the lotus philosophy, the period between the birth of a child and the detachment of the placenta from the child's body is a celebration for the newborn. By leaving the umbilical cord, the time of the transition from fetal life to life in the outside world, which is invaluable for the baby, is extended.

Proponents of this type of childbirth believe that " lotus children " in adulthood are calmer and gentle in nature. Apparently, this is due to the ritual of a child's gentle transition from fetal life to life outside the mother's womb. They also convince themselves that they are self-confident and also more resistant to disease. However, most importantly, lotus-born babiesdo not experience the birth trauma of a sudden umbilical cord cut and separation from their mother.

Lotus childbirth: threats

Specialists emphasize that the placenta functions only in the fetal life of the child, therefore it is redundant after birth. Leaving the placenta attached to the baby's body after delivery is unhygienic and carries the risk of developing an infection. Tissues that break down naturally, such as the placenta, are a source of infection.

However, this is not the only reason why the placenta should be disconnected from the baby as soon as possible after delivery. Doctors emphasize that the placenta contains huge amounts of thromboplastins - substances responsible for blood clotting. Thanks to them, after cessation of circulation in the umbilical cord, the blood in the placenta coagulates. This process protects the baby from cardiovascular arrest, because if the clotting activators in the placenta were to penetrate the baby's body, they could lead to thrombosis and death of the baby. Lotus childbirth increases this risk.

Scientists also disagree that lotus birth is natural. They emphasize that the vast majority of animals, after the birth of their young, chew the umbilical cord to disconnect them from the placenta.

Lotus childbirth in Poland

Most lotus births took place in Australia, New Zealand and America. In Poland, this type of delivery is not yet popular, mainly due to the skeptical attitude of some obstetricians. Therefore, lotus birth usually takes place in the home of the giving birth, under the care of a hired midwife or doula, a woman experienced in motherhood who provides physical and emotional support to the mother during pregnancy, childbirth and afterwards.
