Unfortunately, it still happens that only in the second trimester of pregnancy, a woman is surprised to discover that her growing belly is not related to being overweight and cannot be flattened with fitness and diet. But these are, fortunately, less and less cases.

- Most of thesecond trimesterpregnant women find their belly too small. Almost the same as at the beginning, just "can't see". One of my patients complained: "I would not get into the queue at the office, nor force me to give up my seat on the bus" - recalls Dr. n. med. Witold Rogiewicz, specialist in gynecology and obstetrics, ultrasonologist, assistant professor at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical Center for Postgraduate Education in Bielański Hospital in Warsaw. Meanwhile, in the middle ofpregnancy , i.e. in the 20th week, fetusweighs about 400 g and the uterus is the size of a large grapefruit. Pregnancy will not be visible in overweight women, while in lean women it will be an obvious fact. The size of the abdomen also depends on the firmness of the integuments, pregnancies and sports in the past. And, of course, it is not true that its shape depends on the sex of the offspring. This is sheer superstition.

Second trimester of pregnancy: gender of the fetus

Gender can be identified with 100% certainty around week 16. Of course, there are patients who are very overweight or atypical positions of the fetus, when we recognize the sex later. Almost all gynecologists currently perform ultrasound examinations. Unfortunately, some people only "put the head" for general orientation and hence mistakes in gender recognition, others do it fully professionally. In both cases, the woman has the impression of a well-done test. If we come across a doctor of the type of "applying the head" who says: "I think a girl", we should not buy dresses right away. Let us go to the one who eats his diploma, if the gender is different from the one he "saw". Remember: a girl is when we see the labia, and not when we don't see a pee.

Well-being in the second trimester

Generally speaking, the 2nd trimester gives a woman some relief. The breasts are not so painful anymore, the future mother is used to gas and constipation. The nausea has usually gone away. Everyone knows about pregnancy, nothing needs to be hidden.

Second trimester of pregnancy: where to seek advice, opinion

Family and friends can be a nightmare until the end of pregnancy. I don't know why when someone sees a pregnant womanhe suddenly feels the need to tell about all the gruesome birth cases he has heard about. Someone has a baby with two heads, another has three heads, someone has a miscarriage, etc. There is only one way to avoid it: by losing your hearing during pregnancy. We also have to lose our eyesight, because what can be found on the Internet makes us, doctors, shiver. I even wrote a research paper once en titled "Can a computer harm a pregnancy?" Yes, as long as it is connected to the Internet. " Dear ladies, your attending physician is to dispel your doubts, not aunt Krysia, who gave birth 30 years ago, or Paulina76 from the internet forum.

Second trimester tests

In the second trimester of pregnancy, an ultrasound is waiting for a woman to detect developmental defects of the fetus. They are performed between the 18th and 22nd week of pregnancy. It is worth going to a good specialist for this examination. Here, a doctor of the type of "applying the head" is not enough. Between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy, we also perform a 50 g glucose loading test. Its task is to select a group of pregnant women for whom we conduct more detailed tests for diabetes and glucose intolerance. My advice is to bring some lemon and squeeze the juice into this disgustingly sweet concoction. We also perform other routine tests, such as morphology, urinalysis, etc. You should be examined at each visit. We still meet doctors who do not examine their patients. And how does he know if the cervix is shortening if he does not examine the patient or give her an ultrasound? Does he recognize by his eyes? So far, I can't do it.

What should be worrying in the second trimester of pregnancy

Bleeding and spotting, pain and cramps in the lower abdomen. A constant feeling of heaviness in the abdomen or hardening of the uterus. Blood pressure over 135/85, severe swelling, itchy skin. About this - as well as about all other disturbing symptoms - must be told to the attending physician. And if it is unavailable, go to the hospital.
