Menopause: stereotypes to the past
…. and something started. Every woman goes throughmenopausearound the age of 50, which is associated with a permanent, physiological or postoperative, stoppage of the female reproductive cycle, resulting in the cessation of menstruation. So is the menopause the beginning of old age? According to CBOS research from 2007, Poles feel that old age begins around the age of 62. Assuming, however, that women enter the menopause at the age of 51 or so, it seems reasonable to locate it in the period of maturity, that is, in middle age, not old age. Moreover, Polish women - as shown by the data from the Central Statistical Office of Poland - live for about 79 years, i.e. about three more decades after the menopause.
Contemporary culture is the culture of youth and modern women do not feel old, even when they suffer from ailments accompanying menopause. However, if you look at this cultural imperative as some kind of additional motivation to take care of yourself without going overboard, its impact can be very positive.
Fortunately, the belief based on generalizations that female midlife depression is largely due to menopause has happily gone out of date. Already at the end of the 1990s, people began to indicate more likely causes of depression, such as social or environmental factors, and most of all stressors. Finally, as emphasized by Nisha Jackson, a doctor specializing in hormone and endocrinology, in her work en titled "Menopausal period," not all women experience the same severity of menopausal symptoms.
Menopause is not a sentence, but a task
Since menopause is a natural phase in a woman's life, it should not be considered a judgment but a task. Of course the symptomsthey depend on the lifestyle, environment and genetic background. So it is not just a matter of chance as to how the menopause and the years after it will unfold. The picture and condition of the current and upcoming phases in a woman's life development will also be influenced by the individual habits and decisions she makes. The task in the menopause period is to answer the following question: am I going to cultivate the belief that I am going to be void, sick and depressed, which in turn will actually lead to aging faster, or will I treat menopause as a time to take up new challenges and set new goals for myself?
Menopause is not a one-way ticket. If a woman makes a decision and chooses the second solution, which manifests itself in setting new goals, i.e. taking care of the body and spirit, then such an approach will turn out to be a compass leading to a conscious life in the period of maturity and long afterwards. The role of the calendar is to remind you of the passing time, and the task of women is to develop an attitude towards age from which they will draw strength.
