Urodynamic examination is performed in urination disorders in order to assess the work of the urinary bladder and urethra. The indications for its implementation are, among others pollakiuria and urinary incontinence. How is urodynamic testing done and how to prepare for it?
Urodynamic testis performed with urination disorders in order to assess the work of the urinary bladder and urethra.Urodynamic testshould be the final element in the diagnosis of urination disorders - other tests, e.g. voiding cystography or ultrasound of the urinary system, should be performed earlier, as they facilitate the correct reading of the urodynamic test results.
Urodynamic test - indications for the test
The condition for admission to the test is to have previously performed a urine test, the result of which must be negative, i.e. urine must be sterile.
- bedwetting and daytime wetting (for children)
- prolonged urination time
- infrequent urination
- pollakiuria
- urgent pressure
- batch urination,
- supporting the voiding by compressing the bladder area
- residual urine after micturition
Contraindications for the examination are the current urinary tract infection and menstruation.
The term "urodynamic test" covers several different tests. They measure the amount of urine you pass, the time you pass urine, the pressure inside your bladder and rectum, and the tension in the muscles that hold urine (sphincters).
Urodynamic test - how to prepare for the test?
One week before the examination, please do not take medications that affect the bladder. The day before the examination, you should eat light meals and drink non-carbonated fluids. In the evening, before the examination, insert a glycerin suppository into the anus, and if there is no effect, perform an enema (ready-made enemas available at the pharmacy) to empty the bowel bowel. In the morning you should urinate and stool, drink approx. 0.5 liters of fluid and eat an easily digestible breakfast. You should not urinate until the test - it should be performed with a full bladder. Bring your referral for the examination and your urine test result.

The patient undresses halfway (lower part) and lies back on the urological and gynecological chair, legs slightly apart.
The area of the urethra and anus are anesthetized with a gel. The doctor then inserts special catheters - one into the urethra and then into the bladder, and the other through the anus. In turn, needle electrodes are inserted into the sphincter muscles.
Then the subject is asked to urinate to a special device (uroflowmeter), which measures the amount of urinated urine, as well as the speed of urination. Pressures in the bladder and abdominal cavity are also recorded - all thanks to transducers connected to the catheters. The work of the sphincters is also checked.
Under the term "urodynamic test" there are several different tests, such as: cystometry (evaluation of the bladder during filling and voiding), uroflowmetry (evaluation of voiding), profilometry (evaluation of the pressure profile of the coil) along with electromyographic tests, supplemented with assessment of residual urine in the bladder after voiding.
Does urodynamic testing hurt? The very moment of inserting catheters is unpleasant and may cause discomfort, but it passes.
Urodynamic examination - complications
The most common feeling is temporary burning and discomfort when urinating. Occasionally, a lower urinary tract infection may occur.
Worth knowingUrodynamic examination is reimbursed for people who are insured by the National He alth Fund. If there is no insurance, the cost of such a test will be in the range of PLN 300-350.
