Low back pain usually occurs as a result of overloading in the lower spine. They can be the result of discopathy, posture defects, as well as degenerative changes.

Back painis pain in the lower spine - the lumbosacral part. Most of us suffer from low back pain. It is worse when they accompany us every day and worsen the quality of life. How can you deal with them? Here are some ways.

Back pain - manual therapy

Classic massage is not always a recommended therapeutic method in the case of back pain, it can be risky, especially in acute conditions. However, there are people for whom this type of physical therapy reduces pain and improves well-being. Therefore, it can be used as one of the elements of rehabilitation. Yoga will also have a positive effect.

However, according to specialists, manual techniques (so-called manipulations and mobilization of the spine) that restore the correct position of joints and discs are highly recommended. The procedure performed by an experienced therapist results in better blood supply, nourishment and relaxation of soft tissues, thanks to which the pain subsides. Manual therapy, after contraindications have been ruled out by the orthopedist, can be used both in the acute and chronic phase.

Back pain - taping

In case of back pain, you can use ointments, gels and painkillers, as well as special kinesiotherapeutic tapes (the so-called kinesiotaping).

They are made of high-quality cotton and acrylic, they are waterproof (bathing, swimming will not hurt them), but they are air and water permeable. They stretch to 140% of the original length and are similar to the skin in thickness and weight, so they do not interfere with normal functioning or sports.

They should be applied by a qualified physical therapist. Their task is to tone up the tension of muscles, skin and fascia. Thanks to their elasticity, they support the action of the muscle both in the contraction and diastolic phase. They increase the range of motion, improve microcirculation, and therefore the organs of movement are better nourished. They activate the lymphatic system, acting against swelling.

Paincross - tablets and injections

If physical therapy and patches or ointments do not help, drug treatment should be considered. It will also be needed when we want to reduce the pain sensation during rehabilitation exercises.

It should be remembered, however, that oral preparations, such as paracetamol or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, also have harmful side effects, so they should not be taken for more than two weeks. Your doctor may prescribe muscle relaxants, opioids, and even antidepressants.

In acute pain conditions, if diagnostic tests (eg X-ray of the spine or magnetic resonance imaging) allow to accurately locate the source of the ailment, blockades, i.e. injections of glucocorticosteroids, bring relief. Such injections can only be performed by an experienced doctor. The blockades also make it easier to perform exercises.

Back pain - muscle strengthening

The muscles of the back, buttocks and abdomen, trained since childhood, are the best protection for the spine. When these parts of the body are properly developed and constantly kept in good condition, they will take a large part of the loads to which the discs are exposed. It is never too late to start such training.

Which exercises should I choose? Those that will keep the strength of the back muscles and abdominal muscles in balance. If some are over-exercised and the others are weak, the ailments will not go away and may even get worse.

The condition of the spine is influenced, firstly, by the way we move, and secondly by time. Because the vertebrae that make up the spine wear out like all other joints in our body.

It is worth training with a large gymnastic ball or, for example, with a balance board, i.e. a movable leg rest. They force the body to be balanced, thanks to which the muscles responsible for stabilizing the spine are activated. But if you have diagnosed discopathy, start exercising under the supervision of a physiotherapist or a good trainer.
