Penile fracture sounds unbelievable, but it is possible. Fortunately, this is an extremely rare penis injury. Find out under what circumstances a penile fracture can occur and what steps should be taken. How is a broken penis treated?
Fracture of the penisappears extremely rarely in the medical literature. It accounts for approximately 1-2% of all penile injuries. It is said thathas only described 100 cases ofso far. Statistics say that this type of penile injury occurs around the world approximately every 5 years, although it seems to be an understated number. As incredible as it sounds, it's not that hard to break your penis. Violent masturbation or indecision of partners during sexual intercourse is enough - and the problem is ready. Then there is nothing else but to quickly go to the hospital for the emergency room …
Penis fracture and penis structure
The most surprising in this case is probably the name itself: breaking. Can you break something that doesn't have bones ? And is it soft most of the time? You can. After hearing the characteristic sound of a snap of a broken branch, doubts disappear. Where does this sound come from? To understand this, first you need to familiarize yourself with the structure of the penis.
The urethra runs through its center, surrounded byspongy body . When a man is aroused, it fills with blood, which causeserection , which is a hardening of the penis. The same is true of the cavernous bodies, the two tubular tubular sinuses adjacent to the urethra, which are located on either side of the spongy body.Corpus cavernosumis covered with fibrous connective tissue called the whitish membrane. Usually it is very flexible and resistant to stretching, but there are some limits. Whenthe whitish membrane ruptures , you hear the aforementioned crack of a broken branch and the penis breaks.
In what situations can you break your penis?
Excessive stretching of the whitish membrane may occurwhen the penis is bent too much- e.g. as a result of very intense masturbation, but most of all during sexual intercourse. Particularly dangerous positions are:
- "on the rider"
- "doggy style"
- but also e.g. standing up whenthe man is holding the woman in his arms
Penile fracture occurs when partners lose a beat. Often, the man also blames his partner for the injury, who twisted unexpectedly. In some ways, this may be true - penile fractures usually occurin positions where the dominant side is the woman .
Although in most cases penile fracture occurs as a result of intense penis exploitation in the erectile phase, it is worth mentioning that such injuries are more common in patients who in the past:
- have undergone urological operations
- had erection problems
- have some congenital or acquired penile defects, e.g. Peyronie's disease
How to recognize a broken penis?
A penile fracture tears the tissues under the skin, but not the skin itself. This is calledclosed trauma , during whichblood does not leak outside . When the whitish membrane ruptures, a crack is heard and the man feels:
- very severe pain that occurs immediately after the incident
- withdrawal of erection
- swelling and hematoma at the fracture site
- difficulty and pain while urinating
A fracture of the penis can also be recognized by the fact that the penis bends in the opposite direction to the hematoma. Its shape then resembles a saxophone, so the doctor should have no doubts when making a diagnosis. In addition, blood appears at the opening of the urethra, and hematuria may also occur. In case of doubt, an ultrasound can be performed, as sometimes similar symptoms can be obtained fromdamage to the dorsal vein of the penis .
Treatment of a broken penis and recovery
A broken penis can only be healed by surgery. Before that, however, the patient is given an antibiotic, painkillers, a cooling bandage is applied and the penis is immobilized. The administration of sedatives is also often indicated. The patient can then be prepared for surgery.
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and consists in removing the hematoma and suturing the structure of the whitish membrane. Depending on the degree of rupture of other tissues, the operation may be extended to the reconstruction of the suspension ligament or the urethra. Usually, a catheter is inserted after the procedure.
When is it possible to resume sexual activity?
It is an individual matter. Each patient heals at his own pace, but the severity of the injury also affects it. Usually, intercourse may be attempted a few weeks after the operation.
