Vaginal mycosis, also known as vaginal candidiasis or candidiasis, is a disease caused by yeast-like fungi, mainly by the species Candida albicans. It is an extremely common intimate infection of women that needs to be fought against. What are the symptoms and what is the treatment like?

Vaginal mycosisattacks when the natural bacterial flora is upset. The vagina is home to innumerable microorganisms that make up its natural flora. Lactic acid sticks give the environment an acidic reaction, which protects against the invasion of pathogenic intruders - bacteria, viruses and fungi. But when there are too few or no lactobacilli, the balance between the different types of microbes is upset. Some fungi (usually the yeastCandida albicans ) begin to multiply rapidly. This leads tocandidiasis , popularly known as vaginal mycosis.

Symptoms of vaginal mycosis

Women who suspect a fungus infection notice very characteristic symptoms. Vaginal discharge, which should be odorless, clear, or milky, turns white, becomes lumpy, and smells sweet.

Upławom is usually accompanied by itching and burning. There is also a feeling of dryness in the vagina. Additionally, redness and swelling of the labia may appear.

Sometimes a burning sensation - especially when urinating or during intercourse. Already at the first disturbing signals, you should go to the gynecologist or the pharmacy and ask the pharmacist for help. Mycosis cannot be underestimated.

What causes vaginal mycosis?

Every woman is exposed to fungal infection, regardless of age. What is conducive to its development? The natural biocenosis of the vagina contains innumerable but adequate amounts of yeast-like fungi and bacteria that constitute its natural flora.

In the event of an imbalance, the yeast begins to multiply and spread, while the lactobacilli will not be enough, which will lead to the development of a fungal infection.

Factors favoring the development of a fungal infection are:

  • menopause,
  • pregnancy,
  • body weakness,
  • decreased immunity,
  • intercourse with an infected personpartner,
  • sexually transmitted diseases,
  • hormonal disorders,
  • taking oral contraceptives,
  • occurrence of metabolic diseases, e.g. diabetes - elevated sugar levels change the vaginal pH,
  • avitaminosis - in particular the lack of B vitamins,
  • improper hygiene of intimate parts,
  • bacterial infections,
  • taking medications that reduce immunity, e.g. antibiotics, immunosuppressants.

How to avoid the development of vaginal mycosis?

Particular attention should be paid to the proper hygiene of intimate parts. It's worth washing yourself twice a day - in the morning and in the evening.

You should give up the use of sponges and various types of washers on which fungi nest. It is very important to wear cotton, breathable underwear.

When using public toilets, we must be extremely careful - do not sit down.

In turn, during antibiotic therapy, it is worth taking oral preparations containing lactic acid bacteria - Lactobacillus. Probiotics can also be used vaginally.

Treatment of vaginal mycosis

The gynecologist makes a diagnosis based on an interview, symptoms and microscopic examination of a vaginal smear. It is worth carrying out inoculation from the genital tract, because without proper knowledge, treatment of mycosis may not bring the expected results.

Curing the infection, not curing it, guarantees that the mycosis will come back. Candidiasis is most often treated with antifungal drugs, i.e. nystatin and imidazole derivatives.

In the treatment of vaginal mycosis the following are used:

  • oral medications - when a woman is struggling with advanced and recurrent mycosis,
  • ointments, creams, gels for lubricating intimate places,
  • vaginal globules,
  • gynecological probiotics - oral or vaginal preparations containing Lactobacillus lactobacilli.
  • Intimate infections: trichomoniasis, mycosis, chlamydiosis, vaginosis, herpes
