Our appearance depends on proper skin hydration - the less water there is in it, the faster the skin will age. In addition to regular hydration with fluids, we write about how to take care of the natural water-retaining layer of the skin. See how to take care of dry skin, which cosmetics to buy and which treatment in an aesthetic medicine clinic will have the best results.

The right amount of water in the bodyhas a huge impact on how we look. There should be as much as twenty percent of the epidermis in the stratum corneum. The natural moisturizing factor that absorbs and binds water is responsible for maintaining an adequate level of water in the skin.

But this is not the only condition for good skin hydration. In addition, it is also important to maintain the appropriate tightness of the protective lipid coat, which prevents the skin from penetrating into it by bacteria and protects the natural moisturizing factor from being washed out of the body. The protective lipid coat is a semi-permeable barrier that covers the entire epidermis, made of sebum produced by the sebaceous glands, which usually and as it turns out wrongly, we really want to get rid of.

Sebumis a mixture of sebaceous gland secretions and fatty substances produced by epidermal cells. Its excessive amount makes the skin oily and glows unsightly. However, you should know that intensive removal of sebum is a big mistake, because without it, the skin becomes extremely prone to drying out.

We lose 300 ml of water through our skin

One of the causes of skin dehydration is that water evaporates easily through its surface. - Under average conditions, we lose about 300 ml through the skin. water daily - says Dr. Marek Wasiluk from the Triclinium Center for Modern Medicine in Warsaw. - On sunny summer days, when the air temperature exceeds 28 degrees Celsius, this amount almost doubles. In addition, the situation is made worse by staying in air-conditioned rooms, where the air humidity is too low, which causes the skin to lose water, explains Dr. Marek Wasiluk. In addition, contrary to appearances, long baths and swimming in sea water do not moisturize at all, but on the contrary - they wash off the protective layer, exposing the skin to drying out. Of course, the very action of harmful UV radiationalso favors this process.

Burning, stinging and itching - these are the effects of dry skin

The exposed parts of the body, such as the face, arms and legs, are most exposed to excessive drying and dehydration. Each of us has certainly felt the effects of dry epidermis at least once in our life. Discomfort from tension, burning, and even stinging and itching are common symptoms for this condition. In addition, dry skin loses its protective functions, can crack, which makes it even more exposed to the penetration of microorganisms, allergens and various types of inflammation.

Excessive drying causes the skin to become inflexible and lose its tension and firmness - in short, it ages faster. Additionally, the older we get, the more prone we become to these types of situations. Over the years, the body loses the amount of hyaluronic acid that binds water molecules in the skin, and the thickness of the stratum corneum increases and the number of sebaceous glands decreases.

How to protect the skin from drying out?

The most basic ways to prevent skin dryness and dehydration is to avoid the factors that cause it.

1. It is best to limit long baths and opt for short showers, because contrary to appearances, a long bath leads to dehydration of the skin.

2. In addition, you need to protect the skin against the penetration of harmful UV rays by applying a cosmetic with a high filter every 2 - 3 hours.

3. Above all, however, on hot summer days, you should drink a lot of water, with an indication of mineral water. The body becomes dehydrated very quickly at high temperatures. This is because we sweat a lot, we often spend time in air-conditioned rooms.

Which cosmetics keep water in the body?

If we do not drink enough water, the body will not be able to produce it itself. Without it, even the best moisturizing preparations will not work. Although, as it turns out, you don't need to spend a lot of money on expensive cosmetics to properly protect your skin from drying out.

Preparations of this type are divided into two groups: sealing the hydrolipid barrier (i.e. preventing water evaporation through the skin) and supporting the accumulation of water in the skin.

According to Dr. Marek Wasiluk, creams and lotions with both ingredients work best. - Perhaps it is surprising, but the most effective preparation that protects the lipid barrier is ordinary petroleum jelly! It inhibits water evaporation in over ninety percent - explains Dr. Marek Wasiluk.

Hyaluronic acid in cosmetics does not work

On the other hand, the natural factor that binds water in the skin is, of course, hyaluronic acid. Unfortunately, the bad news is that the acid given in cosmetics is not able to penetrate the epidermis, and for this substance to work, it must be injected directly into the skin with a syringe.

Choose balms with petroleum jelly and glycerin

The second best preparation that works in the same way, but also penetrates the skin, is glycerin. The optimal solution is to buy lotions that contain both petroleum jelly and glycerin.

Recommended moisturizing treatments

If we want to do something more for our skin in the summer, we can stimulate the regeneration of the epidermis, which during this time is very damaged by the sun, water and dry air. For this purpose, you can perform gentle peelings with fruit acids. When it comes to moisturizing aesthetic medicine treatments, needle mesotherapy with hyaluronic acid is of course the best, which can be performed both on the face and on the whole body.
