According to an expertJoanna Kaczorowska - nail stylist

Ingrown nails

I have ingrown toenails. This is true for the 2 largest toes. I try to cut the ingrown part of the plate so that the nail does not lose its square shape at the same time, because I heard that the nails should not be cut so that they have an oval shape. However, the problem persists and every 2 weeks an ingrown part grows back.

Joanna Kaczorowska:Another "home" cutting of nails will probably not help you control ingrown toenails, the more that it is not the first time. I recommend a method that is used more and more often in salons - it is a painless procedure consisting in placing a corrective brace (metal thin plate) on the nail or nails. Putting it on brings very quick relief for sore nails. It does not interfere with everyday life. Such a procedure can be performed in a beauty salon, which, of course, offers such treatments. It is not an expensive procedure, butvery effective and recommended by many specialists. It is also worth seeing the nail to be seen by a nail specialist who will decide which method is the best in this particular case. It may turn out that a professional pedicure is enough, i.e. proper filing and professional cutting of the ingrown toenails, and after such treatment it may turn out that the problem will disappear. And the last piece of advice - also recommendable - a typical home-made one: soak the feet in water with the addition of baking soda. Pour warm water into a bowl and add one packet of baking soda. Soak for at least 30 minutes. Do such "treatments" about 3 times. This warm water with baking soda can work wonders. For my two clients - it helped, so it's worth a try. For sure, one of my methods above should help sick nails.

Water with soap flakes for the ingrown nail

A proven method for an ingrown toenail is to soak your feet in warm water with the addition of soap flakes for washing. An alternative to soap flakes is gray soap, which has antibacterial properties.

  • Soak your feet in warm water with the addition of 2 tablespoons of soap flakes. The foot bath should last about 20 minutes. Then, after thoroughly drying the foot, disinfect the diseased area and gently slide a piece of sterile cotton wool under the edge of the nail sunk into the skin. Thanks to this, the nail will lift slightly and stop digging into the skin tissue. Remember to change the cotton wool daily until the nail grows beyond the toe. Then you can cut it slightly to keep its edge straight.

Walk barefoot as often as possible during the healing of the big toe. If this is not our option, be sure to wear comfortable shoes with wide toes.IMPORTANT!Change your socks as often as possible (even several times a day). This way you will avoid contamination. Remember that neither shoes nor socks should be too tight.

Ice pack for ingrown toenail

After soaking your feet in warm water and drying them thoroughly, apply an ice pack to your toe. Keep holding it until the big toe goes numb (approx. 3 minutes). Then, with sterilized (hydrogen peroxide or alcohol) cutters, cut the ingrown part of the nail. To do this, place the clippers under the edge of the nail at a slight angle and cut out the protruding part, taking care not to damage the surrounding tissue. Then put a gauze pad soaked in a disinfectant solution (e.g. hydrogen peroxide) on your finger and bandage it.

Important

Home remedies for ingrown toenailswill work only in the early stages of the disease, when there is a slight discomfort. These types of treatments should not be performed if you are aroundthe ingrown nail shows swelling and redness. Then you should see a doctor as soon as possible.
