Many people want to stay informed, want to know what is happening in an epidemic threatened country, so they constantly follow news sites and learn about new cases, closed schools and cinemas. At the same time, the same people, overwhelmed by the excess of stimuli, complain about information chaos. They don't really know what to think or do.

5 tips for dealing with anxiety about coronavirus

Joanna Konczanin, a psychologist, trainer, coaching supervisor, who has been working with people for over 25 years, has some tips for us on how to deal with the fear of coronavirus.

1. Direct your attention consciously

Your emotional state depends on it. It is better to refrain from constantly following the events and set aside a certain amount of time throughout the day, e.g. evening news. Focus on contact with household members, engaging readings or just everyday activities.

2. Look for information in good sources

If you are looking for information on the coronavirus, do it inverified, reliable sources , not those looking for sensation. Find what is most important, i.e. tips on rational behavior in a pandemic, from the information retrieved.

3. Stop internal dialogue

If you already have negative thoughts in your head, you canstop the internal dialoguein several ways:

  • do something that will catch your attention, e.g. cooking dinner or reading a book;
  • look at your thoughts from a distance - imagine that you are looking at them from the moon or that you are placing such thoughts on the wave that ebbs away (this is a form of self-suggestion);
  • discuss with your thoughts as with a persistent interlocutor, mock him;
  • tell your bad thoughts "stop" loudly and clearly;
  • perform a few vigorous physical exercises - then you will stop your reaction and change your physical state.

4. Keep fit

When you feel an influx of unpleasant emotions,take care of your physical condition : slow down anddeepen your breath or, on the contrary, get up and walk briskly, dance, make a few jumps or assume a self-confident position: with your legs hip-width apart, place your hands on your hips.

5. Take care of what you have influence

This will help you reduce the feeling of helplessness. Take rational behavior in line with WHO recommendations that can protect you from infection, such as: wash your hands regularly, avoid crowded places, and stay away from other people.

Anxiety is a natural reaction to a situation that we perceive as a threat. At the same time, it worsens our mental functions, makes it difficult to find good solutions and rational behavior. It also disrupts the immune system, which protects our body against pathogenic factors. Therefore, the ability to manage anxiety is extremely important in the current situation.
