Sublingual vaccines, in the form of tablets or drops, are currently the most modern available method of treating allergies in children from 5 years of age. Sublingual desensitisation is a method of desensitization that has been clinically proven to be effective and safe. In Poland, desensitizing sublingual vaccines are still used in very small amounts. Sublingual vaccineis a modernmethod of treating allergies in childrenfrom 5 years of age and adults. The efficacy and safety of sublingual vaccines has been clinically proven. The advantage oforal desensitizationis the convenience of using the vaccine due to the possibility of taking the vaccine alone at home, which significantly reduces the need for constant visits to the doctor.

Sublingual vaccine - administration method

The allergen in the form of drops or tablets is applied to the mucosa under the tongue. This type of desensitization can be performed by the patient at home, outside the doctor's office. In the morning, on an empty stomach, a dose of drops or a tablet is applied to the mucosa under the tongue. The vaccine should be kept in this place for 2 minutes and then swallowed.

  • The drops are applied under the tongue using a special dispenser, which enables easy and precise measuring of the vaccine dose. The vaccine should be stored in a refrigerator at 2-8 ° C.
  • Tablets are the most modern form of desensitization today, available only in the case of allergy to grass pollen. They are inserted directly under the tongue. As they do not need to be stored in a refrigerator, they are the perfect solution for people who travel frequently.

Sublingual vaccine - stages of therapy

Sublingual Immunotherapy has two stages:

  1. Initial treatment, i.e. taking ever larger doses of the allergen every day until the maximum dose, appropriate for a given patient, is reached. This stage takes several days:usually 9-11 for drops and 3 for tablets. The first dose of drops or the first tablet should be taken at the allergist's office.
  2. Maintenance treatment, i.e. taking the prescribed maximum dose regularly, usually every day. In the case of year-round allergens (e.g. dust mites), treatment must be continued throughout the year. In the case of seasonal allergies (to grass pollen, tree pollen, weeds), sublingual desensitization may be carried out around the season, several months a year. For desensitization to be effective, it must last a minimum of 3 years.

Sublingual vaccine - contraindications

Sublingual Immunotherapy is a safe form of allergy treatment. However, due to its oral administration, there are several contraindications to its use. Although oral administration of an allergen does not always have to cause side effects and negative he alth effects, it is better to stop using the sublingual vaccine in the event of:

  • stomatitis
  • pharyngitis
  • dental procedures
  • gastrointestinal disorders
  • asthma exacerbations

Sublingual vaccine - side effects

Sublingual vaccines, may cause adverse reactions. Due to the fact that the subsequent doses of the vaccine are administered independently at home, the doctor should carefully familiarize the patient with the dosage and possible side effects.

Although side effects during the administration of a sublingual vaccine appear relatively rarely, it is worth knowing what symptoms should awaken our vigilance. These include:

  • swollen lips
  • mucosa itching
  • asthma exacerbation
  • rhinitis
  • conjunctival redness
  • hives

Sublingual vaccine in the treatment of children's allergies - experts say

- Sublingual immunotherapy is very effective, especially in the treatment of patients allergic to pollen, and is excellent for desensitizing children. The patient uses the vaccine on his own at home, remaining in contact with the allergist who supervises the treatment - explains Prof. Marten.

Prof. Krzysztof Buołówko, head of the Allergology Center in Łódź, one of the most experienced allergists in Poland, successfully treats allergies with a vaccine in drops and tablets. In his opinion, this method is as effective as the injection vaccine, and much safer and more patient-friendly.

- It is true that drops and tablets are more expensive than injections, but the difference is often apparent. Consider the fact that many patients have to come tospecialist from distant cities. It is connected with expenses for tickets or gasoline, often absences from work or school, sometimes with the costs of visits. If you compare the costs of such monthly trips, in the case of desensitization with injections, with the price of a vaccine used at home, it turns out that they do not differ much annually - says Prof. Krzysztof Buczyko.
