Encorton is a drug containing prednisone - a chemical compound that increases the level of hemoglobin and the number of red blood cells, which helps to distribute oxygen to all cells in the body, which is very desirable during sports competitions, for example. This is why prednisone is on the list of banned doping agents. Check why athletes reach for Encorton and what are the dangerous side effects of using this steroid in doping.
Why hasEncorton (prednisone)gained so much doping in doping? According to research, prednisone is about 4 times stronger than corticosteroids. It is assumed that 5 mg of prednisone has an effect equivalent to 20 mg of cortisol (hydrocortisone), and its mineralocorticoid effect accounts for about 60 percent of hydrocortisone activity.
Therefore, when doped, Encorton releases all reserves of glucose and fatty acids, thus providing more than needed energy for our muscles and brain. In addition, prednisone increases the level of hemoglobin and the number of red blood cells, which helps to distribute oxygen to all cells in the body.
The effects of these processes are:
- increased body efficiency - prednisone improves work efficiency and prevents an energy crisis during increased physical exertion;
- increased resistance to pain - the body does not react to microdamages caused during exercise;
- increased neuronal excitability (a person becomes more aggressive).
All these processes are desirable in endurance sports such as marathons, cycling and long-distance swimming, therefore hydrocortisone and its derivatives are considered prohibited doping agents. Nevertheless, prednisone is a popular doping agent.
In 2007, Marco Borriello, a 24-year-old AC Milan forward, was suspended by a disciplinary committee after doping testing revealed the banned corticosteroids prednisone and prednisolone in his body.
Encorton like glucocorticosteroids
Encorton is more potent than glucocorticosteroids, also known as corticosteroids, hormones produced by the cortex of the adrenal glands that regulate the metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates and fats and increase three processestaking place in the human body:
- gluconeogenesis,
- proteolysis,
- lipolysis.
Encorton: action in the body
The main representative of corticosteroids is cortisol (hydrocortisone) - the so-called stress hormone. Prednisone is a synthetic glucocorticoid - a derivative of cortisol. It also has a similar effect: it intensifies the process of gluconeogenesis, i.e. increases glucose concentration, and like another hormone - adrenaline, it allows the human body to react immediately to the threat (e.g. in stressful situations), which manifests itself in:
- increasing blood pressure,
- bronchodilation,
- increases muscle tone.
This synthetic derivative of cortisol also intensifies the process of proteolysis, i.e. the breakdown of proteins in the body's cells. The consequence of this process is the breakdown of protein immune complexes, so long-term corticosteroid intake weakens the body's immune system. In addition, corticosteroids have an anti-anabolic effect on muscle protein metabolism, i.e. they lead to the degradation of proteins in the muscle tissue, and consequently to its disappearance.
Prednisone affects the lipolysis process and the release of fatty acids from adipose tissue, which increases the concentration of fatty acids in the plasma. Therefore, after long-term use of corticosteroids, fat tissue is unevenly distributed in the body, causing e.g. Cushing's obesity, i.e. the accumulation of fatty tissue on the neck, the so-called buffalo neck, in the spikes of the face (the so-called lunar face, abdominal obesity, with a simultaneous loss of fat tissue in the legs.
Encorton heals many diseases
Encorton is not only doping, it is also a powerful drug. It contains prednisone - a chemical compound that is a synthetic glucocorticosteroid, a derivative of cortisol.
It is an inactive compound. Only after entering the body, it is converted in the liver into the prednisone metabolite, prednisolone. It is a substance with a broad spectrum of activity, incl. anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, anti-rheumatic and immunosuppressive.
Therefore, prednisone is used to relieve numerous symptoms of allergic reactions, in the treatment of neoplastic diseases, inflammation of the thyroid gland, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, as well as in respiratory diseases such as asthma.
