Orthodontics has become one of the most popular and rapidly developing areas of dentistry. Modern methods of malocclusion treatment allow us to help even in the most difficult disease cases.

The scope oforthodonticsincludes: control of the development of teeth and face and correction of deviations in the mutual arrangement of the teeth and the facial bone of the skull. In addition to improving the appearance and well-being, effectively performed orthodontic treatment delays the aging of the face, improves the pronunciation and facilitates oral hygiene. It also eliminates the painful headaches associated with the dysfunction of the temporomandibular joints.
Lidia Drabarek talks to Dr. Emma Kiworkowa-Rączkowska, orthodontist and owner of the Villa Nova Dental Clinic.

What are the main causes of malocclusion?

» Dr Emma Kiworkowa-Raczkowska: They are diverse, but the most numerous group aremalocclusion , which arise in the first years of a child's life. Factors leading to improper tooth alignment include the use of poorly selected teats, mouth breathing, thumb or lip sucking, and premature loss of deciduous teeth caused by e.g. injuries and caries.

When and how to prevent malocclusion?

» E.K-R: You really need to take care of it from the first days of a child's life. It is important to pay attention to: the method and time of feeding the baby, the use of appropriate teats, early introduction of spoon feeding, getting the baby used to biting and chewing hard food. It is difficult and important and requires great patience from parents to prevent bad habits (e.g. sucking fingers, lips, biting objects, etc.).

When should you visit an orthodontist with your child and does age matter in orthodontic treatment?

» E.K-R: As early as possible, ie around 3 years of age. Orthodontic treatment of children is necessary because malocclusion is characterized by the fact that they do not regress by themselves, on the contrary, they worsen as the child grows. Treatment in children is faster than in adults, and if started early enough, it often avoids the removal of permanent teeth due to orthodontic indications and prevents complications of malocclusion. I would like to add that age is not a barrier to orthodontic treatment.Treatment can be started at any age by selecting the appropriate method. In many cases, in adults, the initiation of treatment is associated with aesthetic conditions.

In the Villa Nova clinic you use many methods of malocclusion treatment known in the world …

» E.K-R: We try to give each patient a choice. This applies both to choosing the best individual treatment method and selecting it to the patient's financial capabilities. We usebraces for teethfixed and removable. Already at the first orthodontic consultation, we diagnose the type of defect. The next step is to prepare a treatment plan and then apply it step by step to the patient. Modern orthodontics allows you to minimize the time of treatment and to carry it out so that it is not visible to others. This is of particular importance for intensively working patients and public figures.
