Hemp seed (hemp seed) is called a diet super ingredient due to its ideal omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid ratio and its 10 amino acid content, making it an excellent source of protein. In addition, hemp seeds are rich in vitamins and minerals. Find out why you should include hemp seeds in your diet.

Hemp seedscan be found more and more often on store shelves in the bio-food department. Due to the fact that they have several unique features that have a beneficial effect on the body, they are called superfoods. Hemp seeds, among other things, improve the blood lipid profile and thus reduce the risk of atherosclerosis, heart attack and stroke. They also improve the appearance of the skin, hair and nails, regulate digestion, improving the functioning of the digestive system.

Cannabis seeds and marijuana

Cannabis seeds are most often associated with seeds purchased for the purpose of illegally growing marijuana. The hemp seeds that you can buy in stores are not marijuana seeds. There are two types of hemp:true hemp(Cannabis sativa), i.e. industrial hemp that can be grown in European Union countries, andcannabis(Cannabis indica), or marijuana. Hemp seeds are used in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.

Hemp seeds: composition and properties

Hemp seeds are distinguished by the ideal ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids (3: 1) for humans, which the body cannot synthesize and therefore must be supplied with food. This ratio is very important, because omega-6 fatty acids have a pro-inflammatory effect, and omega-3 anti-inflammatory - too much omega-6 in relation to omega-3 increases the tendency to inflammation in the body, which promotes e.g. arthritis, diabetes, arterial hypertension. Most Poles consume too much omega-6 in relation to omega-3, which is why hemp seeds are a product that is worth enriching your diet.

Fatty acids consumed in the right proportions reduce the risk of heart attack, blood clots, cardiac arrhythmias, lower blood cholesterol and lower blood pressure. Moreover, fatty acidsreduce joint inflammation, improve the appearance of the skin by increasing its elasticity, are helpful in the treatment of skin diseases (eczema, psoriasis). They improve mental performance and reduce inflammation in the digestive system.

Hemp seeds are a good source of vitamin E, iron, calcium, zinc, phosphorus, and magnesium. Vitamin E is a strong antioxidant, it protects, among other things, omega-3 fatty acids against oxidation, thus preserving their he alth-promoting properties. It also affects the elasticity of blood vessels, improves blood circulation, lowers the risk of atherosclerosis and ischemic heart disease. Zinc, on the other hand, ensures the proper functioning of the immune system and the he althy appearance of the skin, hair and nails.

In addition, hemp seeds are a source of high-quality protein. The protein in hemp seeds is comparable to animal proteins, with no cholesterol or saturated fatty acids. It is better absorbed than soybean proteins and does not contain bloating compounds.

Hemp seeds are also characterized by a high content of dietary fiber, which improves the functioning of the digestive system, promotes weight loss, lowers the concentration of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood and normalizes carbohydrate disorders.

Hemp seeds: what form should you consume?

Hemp seeds are available in the form of shelled and unshelled seeds and ground seeds. Unshelled seeds contain a much greater amount of dietary fiber and carbohydrates compared to shelled seeds, and shelled seeds have a much higher content of protein and fats compared to unshelled ones. Hemp seeds are a valuable addition to dishes. They can be used as an addition to home-made bread, flour products, salads, fruit cocktails, breakfast cereals, muesli or as a snack.
