Sonohysterography is an examination of the uterus that is performed during the diagnosis of infertility and when it is necessary to precisely assess the condition of the uterus, e.g. in some uterine fibroids or polyps.
Sonohisterographytoexamination of the uterusfilled with contrast using the ultrasound machine. It is a good alternative to hysterosalpingography (HSG), because it has no harmful effects on the patient's he alth.
Sonohisterography: indications
In the case of infertility, sonohysterography allows to assess both the external and internal contours of the uterus in terms of possible developmental changes and, above all, to check the patency of the fallopian tubes and exclude the presence of adhesions that could mechanically impede the process of fertilization and implantation.
In the case of fibroids or polyps, sonohysterography allows to confirm whether the change seen in transvaginal ultrasound is real, or whether it is an artifact, e.g. a blood clot. In addition, sonohysterography allows the doctor to accurately determine the location of the lesions, which influences further treatment decisions.
Sonohisterography: the course of the study
The doctor who conducts the examination after inserting the gynecological specula introduces a very thin, soft catheter through the cervix into the uterine cavity. This catheter allows the uterus to be filled with saline. During the filling of the uterus, a transvaginal (transvaginal) ultrasound examination is performed. The examination is practically painless.
